🔥 The Jean Dreze Debate: Priorities, Soldiers, Reporters and What Actually Matters 🇮🇳 A strange debate is swirling across India right now over Jean Dreze. Some journalists and commentators are shocked that a reporter didn’t immediately recognise him. The question they’re asking is: “How can anyone not know such a big man?” 🤔 But is Dreze (Ch..tia) really that big? Or are certain (Ch..tia and ch..tia L.F.T Brigade) people simply working overtime to make him look bigger than he is? This country has soldiers who freeze their bones at –50°C on the heights and bake in +50°C desert heat, standing guard so the rest of us can sleep. Do these journalists know their names? Do they know what their families go through? Rarely. There is no foreign-passport romance, no “messiah of the poor” label attached to those men. So they stay invisible. 🫡 Jean Dreze was born in Belgium. He came to India, became involved in the design of schemes like MGNREGA, and later took Indian citizenship. On paper MGNREGA was meant to give work in exchange for wages. On the ground it often became “dig a hole, fill the same hole.” Taxpayer money went into activities that created little lasting asset. How much actually reached the poorest, and how much stayed with middlemen, contractors and local power brokers, was never rigorously tracked. The scheme created dependency in many places instead of durable productive work. Later governments had to change it because it was not sustainable. 💸 This was not just one scheme’s failure. It reflected a broader approach that treats poverty as something to be managed through permanent state dependence rather than reduced through skills, growth and productive jobs. Large parts of the old left-wing toolkit worldwide have done exactly this keep people reliant on the state. In India the same template was imported, foreign voices were elevated, and policies were pushed with little serious scrutiny of leakage or long-term effects. When results disappointed, accountability was thin. Those now shouting because a reporter did not recognise Dreze rarely ask the harder questions: Where did the money actually go? How much leaked? What permanent change did it bring to the lives of the rural poor? Real priorities for this country are clearer border security, stronger growth, skills and real employment, and tighter control over waste and corruption. Knowing the soldier who stands in extreme weather is more important than knowing every foreign economist who helped design a welfare programme whose outcomes remain contested. 🛡️ Glorification and criticism both have a place. Automatically declaring every outsider who participated in a scheme a “great man,” and calling anyone who questions the results an idiot, is not journalism. India has more urgent work than deciding who gets to be called big on social media. Soldiers’ bones are still freezing and burning so the country stays safe.
