Thank you to His Majesty for his kind words to Albertans:

Dr. Jean Walrond calls herself a “Sickle Cell Warrior,” and she has earned that title many times over. Since her arrival in Canada from the Caribbean in 1968, she has worked as an advocate for those living with sickle cell disease… /1
Those individuals include her daughter, whose diagnosis spurred Dr. Jean to make fighting sickle cell her life’s work. As president of the Sickle Cell Foundation of Alberta, she is ensuring patients have greater access to the resources and care they need. #ABWomenNewcomers /2

As more information emerges about the terrible fire at CFB Wainwright, my thoughts are with the victims, their families, loved ones and fellow military personnel, and the first responders working bravely to contain the damage.
The #PersonsCase was decided by the Privy Council in London 97 years ago today, recognizing women as “persons” under Canadian law and opening a new era of female possibility and achievement. I salute the determination of the Famous Five and their pursuit of justice.
Last night, eight great Albertans were inducted into the Alberta Order of Excellence at a ceremony at Government House. Once again, I congratulate Jodi Abbott, Clive Beddoe, Bruce Bentley, Heather Culbert, Ian Holloway, Kim McConnell, Ron Triffo and Paul Wynnyk...
My heart goes out to all those affected by the tragic traffic incident in Calgary. I extend my deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives & wish the injured a full recovery. Thank you to all first responders who came to the aid of others.
Born in Croatia, Milica Opacic is currently Canada’s Honorary Consul of the Republic of Serbia in Alberta. Few individuals are doing more to promote the appreciation of the culture and heritage of her home country in Alberta, such as through Calgary’s annual Serbian festival. /1
She routinely engages with all levels of governments the diplomatic and consular corps, cultural organizations, business leaders and community leaders to strengthen cooperation among Serbian organizations and Canadian institutions. Ziveli Serbia! #ABWomen Newcomers /2
During Women’s History Month, I am showcasing some Alberta community leaders I admire. And seldom have I met a more powerful and engaging public speaker than AOE recipient Kim Ruether. After the tragic death of her teenaged son Brock, she channeled her grief into action… /1
Scottish-born nurse Louise Miller is one of those indomitable spirits who inspire all who meets her. She came to Edmonton in 1965, and soon became chair of the AB Ass’n of Registered Nurses as well as the first female non-politician on the Royal Alex’s board of directors. /1
When a rare virus left her a paraplegic, she pushed for therapies and technologies to improve the quality of life for people with spinal cord injuries. As an advocate, a volunteer, an author and a public speaker, she has been an indefatigable force for good. #ABWomenNewcomers /2
On #PregnancyAndInfantLossAwarenessDay, I send strength and love to mourning parents during their time of grief. I hope peace and comfort will soon be yours.
When Romanian-born Vivian Manasc graduated from McGill University in 1976, she saw Edmonton as a great place for an ambitious architect to make their mark. Deeply inspired by Indigenous communities’ relationship with nature, she became a pioneer in sustainable buildings. /1
Her work is visible all over the province, the Calgary Emergency Operations Centre and the Greenstone Government of Canada Building being notable examples. She has also created educational programs designed to foster the next generation of architects. #ABWomenNewcomers /2
Born in Hong Kong, Eleanor Chiu emigrated to Canada in 1982. Her skills at accounting and corporate finance propelled her to top positions at the Nova Corporation and Trico Homes, but she never stopped mentoring entrepreneurs and providing microloans to newcomers looking… /1
…to pursue their own dreams in Canada. She is one of many amazing women who have come here from other countries and whose skills, determination and community spirit continue to make Alberta a special place to live. I’ll be profiling some of them this week. #ABWomenNewcomers /2
