Hi @TerraOrBust - just been reading this bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c6jdโฆ and wondered if this is how Burnham is going to frame a re-run of the referendum?

The original sin of Brexit was not allowing Vote Leave to own the project after victory.
In wrestling power from the people who won the referendum, insane internal machinations within the Parliamentary Conservative Party prevented those who campaigned for the outcome from delivering that outcome.
From the start the whole project was decapitated.
And so here we are now, ten years on, having repealed precious little EU law, pursuing no supply side reform, indeed still building a ยฃ125m bat tunnel in order that HS2 abide by the retained EU Habitats Directive.
For the best part of a decade the political class stole the victory from the people.
And now they have the temerity to say their own failure is actually the fault of the people for wanting an independent country.

Rejoining the single market would restore more frictionless trade which, ceteris paribus, should aid economic growth, tho by how much is hard to discern.
But there are costs. Above all Brussels regulation, which inhibits high-tech and made the EU something of an AI backwater. Whereas the UK is 3rd in the world re AI and has more unicorns (high-tech start ups worth ยฃ1bn+ each) than the next three biggest European markets combined.
So that would inhibit growth (and about 25% of our growth comes from high tech these days).
The net would certainly be nothing like enough to generate enough revenues to pay for the massive tax cuts E Davey is calling for.
The Wargame on Sky is amazing. @michaelgove and the rest of the team did a fantastic job; entertaining but challenging. Here's hoping our government rises to the task ahead.
Dear @LBC - question for Shakeel on the AI discussion. How far advanced above and beyond ChatGPT 6 Astra does he think the non-public models are?

A Burnham claimed yesterday that the 2016 vote for Brexit ushered in a decade of low growth.
Heโs right that thereโs been low growth, though not just in Britain, which suggests Brexit is not quite the explanation he thinks it is.
I think Brexiteers hard pressed to show that Brexit has been good for growth.
But Remainers lack evidence it has crippled or undermined growth.
In the decade from mid-2016 til mid-2026, the UK had the 3rd biggest growth in real GDP (13%) of the G7. Well behind the US (27%) and Canada (20%) but ahead of France (12%), Italy 10%, Germany 8%, and Japan (6%).
I think we can all agree Japan made a big mistake leaving the EU.
How to end the Brexit shitshow, by Dominic Cummings (@Dominic2306)
Almost all the positive things that we could have changed after Brexit, Westminster, the Tories and Labour have been adamant in refusing to do.
But just because of inertia, we havenโt adopted various of the EU regulations, and therefore we havenโt shot ourselves in both feet the way that Brussels has.
As the old system fails, something new is being born โ but for the moment, it is unclear exactly what.

Neilโs narrator adds:
Since the Brexit referendum the UK economy has grown faster than Germany, France and Italy, which are all still in the EU. So much for the Brexit drag.
The higher inflation, higher interest rates and poor fiscal position are overwhelmingly the result of the economic policies of previous Tory governments, exacerbated by the current Labour one, which continued to borrow too much, tax too much, spend too much. Hence the UKโs high gilt yields. Brexit didnโt even have a walk on role.
To summarise my point: Brexit has led to lower growth and higher inflation, thus a worse fiscal position, necessitating higher interest rates and creating more expensive gilts than we otherwise would have had worsening our gap compared to France since 2020. To summarise @afneil point: the worsening gap with France is purely Truss and Reeves and unlinked to Brexit. Make your own mind up!

Superb from @michaelgove.
The silence in the room is telling.
When eloquently delivered facts hit an audience, with many perhaps quietly grasping for the first time that the pro-EU lobby in Britain have been peddling nonsense for a decade.

Important we give these Green councillor resignations as much spotlight as the BBC and Sky give Reform and Tory resignations.

When I reported on Zahawi I got a handful of abusive messages. When he apologised & it turned out I was right, they all stopped.
But Polanski? Wild levels of abuse, which just ramped up when Polanski apologised & it turned out I was right.

This man says, โlet me get this straight.
When White people move into an area, itโs called โcolonizingโ or โgentrificationโ,
which is bad.
But if people of a high melanin count move into an area, thatโs โcultural enrichmentโ and โdiversity is our strengthโ,
which is good.
But then if those same White people donโt want any more โcultural enrichmentโ or are tired of โdiversityโ being their strength, thatโs called โWhite Flightโ,
which is bad.
So they donโt want White people to come or to go.
Itโs almost as if they donโt want them (whites) to exist at all.โ
Heโs figuring it out.

British law over religious law. British culture over religious deference. The right to criticize ANY religion โ Christianity, Islam, all of them โ is a non-negotiable feature of a free society, not a privilege the majority granted to the minority.
