Uziel Gal submitted his prototype in 1950, which outperformed competing designs due to its simplicity and ruggedness. Despite Gal's explicit request that the weapon not be named after him, the Israeli military officially adopted the design under the name "Uzi" in 1951, introducing it into widespread service by 1954.
