Career idea: write these papers and collect citations 🔥“Why median splits are amazing” 🔥”The benefits of treating ordinal variables as Gaussian” 🔥”Nearly significant? An important concept” 🔥”The immense epistemic fertility of not sharing code”
If I had $10 for every time I found a citation used to rationalize the stratification of a continuous variable, that doesn't actually support said stratification, I could afford a Nature APC for this review.

There are many claims for the oldest pub in Britain. The most famous is the Trip to Jerusalem at Nottingham: reputedly opened 1189, but this was invented in 1909 by the landlord. In reality its a 17thC building that was used as a pub by 1751. So which is the oldest? ...a thread🧵

Plan to quote this in an upcoming paper. I think it elegantly showcases issues around biological reductionism, the levels problem (Eronen), and hierarchies of organizations (Wimsatt).

There are entire fields in psychology doing research with measures that were never properly validated. Time for an “expression of concern” for a few thousand papers?

"I’m a woman, I’m young, I’m Muslim, I’m left-wing. When people attack me, it’s usually for one – or all – of those reasons." I spoke to @ElleUK about dealing with racism and abuse – and how I won't let that stop me from fighting for social justice: elle.com/uk/news-politics/a6…

We are still looking for a reviewer with expertise in SAS and ideally some domain knowledge in intergroup processes. Please get in touch if that describes you, or kindly help us boost this signal!

If any kid is hurt tonight, responsibility will fall on the mayor and univ presidents. Other leaders and schools have found a safe, de-escalatory path. This is the opposite of leadership and endangers public safety. A nightmare in the making. I urge the Mayor to reverse course.
NEW - @NYCMayor says Columbia protest has been "co-opted" and is going to share their intel, he says at 1 Police Plaza. He advises students involved in the protest to leave the area and tells parents to tell their kids to leave "before the situation escalates."

AOC: Oil and gas already enjoy an obscene wealth of tax giveaways in this country. But we’re supposed to believe if we let them drill just a little bit more, that they will finally lower their prices. This is all trickle down nonsense

"I got to figure,” the tenant said. "We all got to figure. There’s some way to stop this. It’s not like lightning or earthquakes. We’ve got a bad thing made by men, and by God that’s something we can change.” John Steinbeck
Absolutely insane footage of the NYPD entering Columbia University. It’s endless.

Progress on making my blog boring vanilla html. If you've not read any of this, I suggest the Regression Fire and Dangerous Things three-part series. It's like a super-condensed version of my book/course, a neutron star of Bayesian causal inference. elevanth.org/

And I still maintain that (profiteering) journals paying for a system where unemployed postdocs become paid error-checkers would simultaneously solve two problems of academia: lack of reproducibility & ECR job insecurity (short-term contracts/ too many postdocs for lectureships)
So happy to see this. I don't think I'm the only postdoc that thinks this would be a dreamy full-time job? (Be paid to thoroughly read fascinating papers in detail, put your critical skills to good use, and contributing to the validity & trustworthiness of science?!)

Hi @rlmcelreath , me again! 👋 It's another ordered logit (love dem Likert scales). I can plot the estimates for each question, as shown, but can I plot (or compute) the 'strength' of the condition effect (b_cond) for each question? i.e how b_cond effect varies for each question?

can I get it from this model output? Or do I have to run a new model with varying slopes? I have a feeling it might be something like m13.3 from the OG Rethinking Bible but I just can't get my head around that code. Forgive me I use Rethinking/R versions from the bronze age 🙏
