I am now full doomer—not because chatbots are going to become “superintelligent,” but because we bet the entire economy on the absurd science fiction story that they will.

If it were possible, I would swap my life for yours quite easily. We would start with a two week trial period. Just to check you were comfortable with somebody having to lift you on and off the toilet and perform associated cleaning duties every time you needed a pooh. Also, be warned that you'll only be able to use a one typing finger, or two on an extremely good day, but don't worry because you can easily learn the joys of speech recognition software. It definitely never fucks up on a monumental scale.
Now, what else is that you need to know? Oh yes, among other things, say goodbye to leaving the house whenever you like, you'll find that you will only be able to go anywhere if there is somebody available to take you and look after your whilst you are there.

in some sense I feel like western civ kinda collapsed in 2008. the financial collapse was bad but the utter lack of accountability was worse. welfare for the billionaire class and austerity for the rest of us. everyone in my generation not working in tech had their economic prospects decimated. they’re not on twitter so who gives a fuck. media and political institutions failed to keep the pressure on or extract any meaningful concessions from the people responsible. it’s like that movie trope where the teenagers lose respect for their dad when they realise he has been cheating on mom. the mask came off, our elites were proven to be rotten to the core and for the past 18 years we’re just compounding more evidence that common people are powerless and being ethical is for suckers. the left should have been talking labour rights but they got nerdsniped by the pronoun wars. meanwhile we keep playing the shell game hoping these billionaire fucks save us with the everything computer, as if this new tech revolution is gunna turn out any better than the last one. the polite thing to do is to pretend we don’t notice. build a cute little life off the grid and practice your nervous system regulation. I keep wondering when will people get tired of being powerless but the end is not yet in sight. anyway rant over now I will return to being cheerful because what else are you gunna do. peace
