Closing in on Didymos. ☄️
Our planetary defence mission Hera has captured its first close-up of the binary asteroid system, 60 km away, as it prepares to investigate the aftermath of DART’s historic impact with Dimorphos.
Detailed images of both asteroids are coming on 25 November.

80 years ago, Johns Hopkins APL helped capture the first photos of Earth from space.
On Oct. 24, 1946, James Van Allen and APL colleagues launched cameras and scientific instruments aboard a captured German V-2 rocket, giving humanity its first glimpse of Earth from space.

📡 Astronomers have detected radio signals coming directly from an exoplanet for the first time.
No, it’s #notaliens.
Using the MeerKAT radio telescope in South Africa, researchers detected repeating radio bursts from Beta Pictoris b, a young giant planet about 63 light-years away. The signals appear to come from auroras generated by the planet’s powerful magnetic field.
The discovery could give astronomers a new way to study the magnetic fields of worlds beyond our solar system.
The research is currently undergoing peer review.

In all the discussion about colonising Mars, I don't see much about how the soil is poisonous to us.
This was only discovered in 2008. It contains perchlorates, which are environmental toxins here on Earth.
Any human contact with Mars dust? Bad news in the long run.

The Moon’s got a big new crater! 🕳️
Spotted by NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, the McGetchin crater formed when a rock as big as a six-story building crashed into the Moon. It’s 141 feet deep and wider than the length of two football fields.🪨💥🌕
