I think Anakin’s fall would be more sympathetic if he didn’t kill the Tuskens out of revenge. I think if he needed to do it to get to Shmi, it’d be a little better at establishing “he had to do it to save someone he loved, but even then it wasn’t enough” and lead to that fall.

Just make it so Anakin had to do it out of necessity, not choice. “I have to do whatever it takes to save her” makes it a lot more sympathetic than just doing it out of revenge and it makes the slippery slope a lot more believable.
