I’ve never voted Tory. And would suggest to trust them after they inflicted such destruction to the country would be a serious act of self-harm.
Are some people seriously contemplating voting Tory again? Have they lost their minds? Do they not remember the years 2010-2024 - the economic stagnation, the housing crisis, the immigration shambles, the deepening 'wokeification' of our institutions and society, the mad green zealotry, the sacrificing of our energy security? Does all that get forgotten because Kemi Badenoch can turn a decent phrase? The Tories deserve to die a slow death. They should certainly never get anywhere near power again for a good many years.

There is a party that understands that you can be left-wing in many areas and completely avoid succumbing to modish anti-West omnicauses.
It does, in fact, make perfect sense to prize and protect our country and civilisation if you're left-wing.
Nihilistic - and in this case deeply antisemitic - causes are not the route to human flourishing.

At the dawn of globalisation, around 2000, I believed that markets, in their ceaseless search for efficiency, were capable of driving global prosperity. I worked for years for a highly professional global oil company. It was imperfect, of course, but run by clever people who ceaselessly searched for better ways of doing things. I felt the temptation to echo the view of my colleagues that governments should cushion the impact of change, but as far as possible get out of the way and let globalist efficiency deliver global prosperity.
I still believe that private business, under competitive pressure, will outperform state enterprises. However, private businesses owe no allegiance to any political entity. They guarantee no particular citizen’s interest. And that, in an age of fragile supply chains, is a challenge to our national economic model.
2008 was the first big eye-opener for me. When the globalised banks failed, it was the state that had to step in and bail them out, because some banking is a vital utility in the economy. That was the first cry in the night. Global supply chains work brilliantly, and then fail suddenly. Often, they fail with the force of an economic heart attack to the nation.
We saw it again in 2020, as Covid put enormous strain on global vaccine supply chains, and caused a race to hoard vaccines within borders. Those with the best pharma skills got the vaccines first. Covid was bad, but the next pandemic could be 10x worse.
Right now, we see it in the fuel supply system. Private oil operators, behaving perfectly rationally from their point of view, have reduced 9 UK oil refineries twenty years ago, to 4 now. As a result, the UK has gone from producing 85% of our diesel needs in 2000, to only 45% today. It is diesel which fuels our farms, factories, HGVs etc, and acts as the real life blood of our economy. The Straits of Hormuz constriction, and damage to Russian and Ukrainian oil refineries, have made global supply of diesel very short : and left the Uk particularly exposed.
What made global sense for private oil companies does not make sense for the British economy when global supply chains stumble.
In 2000, at the dawn of globalisation, the world basked in a unipolar moment, a Pax Americana which policed global supply chains. In 2026, history is back - and none of this can be relied upon.
So strategic national needs, once again, have become the legitimate interest of government. Global supply chains are efficient : but national supplies are reliable.
That is why all political parties need to begin to think hard, once again, about how genuinely strategic industries can be maintained onshore. The future must be a world of global markets where there is wide diversity and abundance of supply, but more government-assured ownership of truly strategic industries. This will carry an efficiency cost. We can mitigate that cost if we change the British habits of a lifetime and run national industries well, of course, but insurance is never free.
Market fundamentalism is dying. Lumpen state socialism died in the 20th century. Pragmatic, strategic, risk-based thinking and industrial policy are lessons we must learn again. And no political party in the Uk - except the tiny SDP - has really grasped this.

In 1953, about 1 in 9 British voters belonged to a political party. Today it's about 1 in 50.
Parties used to be paid for by their members. Mostly, they aren't any more.

Absolutely on-the-money.
Reckless, damaging stupidity by Tory govts to privatise our crucial infrastructure, especially given their natural monopolies.
Labour did nothing to reverse it - in fact, carried on with a disastrous part-privatisation of the London Underground🤷🏻♂️

There is a beautiful irony & absurdity in the fact that, if the Labour Government were to give away the Chagossians’ homeland to Mauritius without Washington’s consent, they would be in breach of international law.
Unless the US agrees to amend the 1966 treaty, Labour is actually choosing to break international law to undermine the British national interest.
Ridiculous.

I repeatedly asked journalists like @DPJHodges why he doesn’t think it’s a newsworthy story worth investigating but he didn’t bother answering.

Last week, Cllr Jack McGlenen (pictured below with William Clouston), the SDP councillor for Dalton and Dawdon ward on Durham County Council, was violently assaulted in the street, in an attack believed to be connected to his civic responsibilities. He sustained serious but, thankfully, temporary damage to an eye as a result.
We are sure that all political parties join with us in abhorring acts of violence against elected representatives, whatever their political persuasion.
We know that all SDP members will join with us in wishing Jack a speedy recovery and a rapid return to working on behalf of his constituents.

The whole Chagos surrender deal is outrageous. Treason charges should be brought against anyone peddling this £35bn sellout.
Andy Burnham is set to speak to Mauritius PM Navin Ramgoolam by phone today about implementing the Chagos surrender deal, before meeting Trump at the UN General Assembly tomorrow.
Nigel Farage said: "I have it on good authority that the PM will tomorrow at midday be speaking to the Mauritian Prime Minister."
The Chagos deal was pulled from Parliament back in April after Trump made clear the US opposed it. Burnham has stayed publicly committed to it since.
Taking his script from Mauritius the day before he sits down with Trump tells you everything. Britain has a Prime Minister who checks with a former colony before he checks with our own strongest ally.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has threatened Danny Tommo with the “full force of the law” if he or members of Patriot Platform commit crimes, while also branding him “far-right” and an “outright racist”.
Threatening him before any offence has been committed looks like an attempt to intimidate people out of lawful protest.
People are angry because mass immigration, illegal migrant accommodation and weak border control have been forced on communities for years.
The Government created this mess. Now it is turning its anger on the people protesting against it.

"The Six Degrees of Shami Chakrabarti" was coined by the late Rod Liddle and sums up perfectly the incestuous and unelected liberal Brahmin class under which we now labour.
In 2020, Shami Chakrabarti, a Labour peer, said Black Lives Matter protests were “a movement not a moment”.
She said Extinction Rebellion “is in a noble tradition of peaceful direct action so that ordinary people might be heard”.
She then said Palestine Action “includes criminality” but that banning it was “a step too far”.
Now she wants to designate working-class men and women who are peacefully protesting the invasion of Britain as “terrorists” and have them banned altogether.
Do you see the hypocrisy?
