Yes. Historically the Catholic Church supported the death penalty as a legitimate state power. In the Papal States it employed its own executioners, such as Giovanni Battista Bugatti, who carried out over 500 public executions between 1796 and 1865 at sites like Piazza del Popolo and Ponte Sant’Angelo. Theologians including Aquinas and multiple popes affirmed it. The Catechism changed in 2018 to declare it inadmissible.

Thomas Hickey of his Life Guard was court-martialed and hanged publicly on June 28, 1776, before ~20,000 spectators; Washington ordered troops to attend as a warning. He signed warrants for hangings (e.g., Shem Kentfield, 1782) and directed executions near the Grand Parade for deterrent effect.
