Quite spectacular it was to see the 1000 year old, old-growth coast redwoods in Hendy Woods State Park, near Philo, in Anderson Valley, northern California. Immense majestic trees.

I feel like I won the lottery. I’m on a 4-hour Southwest flight in an extra leg room exit row seat, and the seat next to me is EMPTY! 😳😬

A wine to sip with the Sunday dinner pot roast. Big nose, firm tannins, layers of deep dark fruits. 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, & 1% Cabernet Franc. Aged in 95% new French oak. So nice. This baby has years & years of life remaining. 2018 Pahlmeyer Proprietary Red. Cheers!

Enjoying an away college game in Iowa City. Lots of scarlet on the stadium. Fun to wave at the kids on the hospital end of first quarter. Halftime my team leads 17-6. Go Buckeyes!

Sunday wine. Dense layers of deep blue fruit with a hint of raisin. Beautiful structure. Strong tannins and oak, this has plenty of life remaining. It’s a terrific wine. 2015 Andremily Mourvèdre. Cheers!

The first winery list I joined, and have been drinking the wines nearly 40 years. The proprietary red, a classic Napa Meritage, is a great red wine IMO. This vintage is a delicious and classic example. 2019 Pahlmeyer. Cheers!

Sunday dinner sipper. Serving it up with grilled salmon. Loads of juicy bright red fruits, great balance, and softening tannins. It’s a delicious mouthful and quite enjoyable. 2019 Occidental, Occidental Station Pinot Noir., Sonoma Coast. Cheers!

Still quite remarkable at age 13, with a bright nose, plenty of fruit, and great structure. 2013 Marcassin Sonoma Coast Chardonnay. Cheers!

In St. Louis’ Forest Park on Art Hill, beneath the STL Art Museum (from the 1904 World’s Fair), & occurring every 5 years, is the Flags of Valor. A powerful tribute to 9/11, each of the 7620 flags are for those lost that day & since then during the war on terror. Very impressive.

Pairing this tonight with roast chicken. From the husband & wife team of Jeff Pisoni & Bibiana González Rave, it’s a blend of 75% Sauvignon Blanc & 25% Semillion. It’s bright & crisp & packed with tropical citrus & quite tasty. 2024 Shared Notes Les Leçons des Maîtres. Cheers!

Friday wine. A varietal some love to hate. I’ve always liked it, and this is a stellar example. Lovely nose, lots of cherries with some spice, medium oak, tannins firm. This has plenty of life ahead. @jebdunnuck 98 points. 2019 Arietta One Eleven Artists’ Reserve Merlot. Cheers!

A new recipe tonight courtesy of my bud @JohnMFodera (who never “likes” the wines I post), his Pasta Alla Zozzona. Easy to make & deeply flavorful, my wife & I loved it. Paired with this splendid 2018 Poggio Stenti Reserve Sangiovese, from the 2024 Rustic Tuscany tour. Cheers! 😬
