There had been whispers around the mutant (as well as the human) population that a newly funded institution was built. Not just any institution, one that held mutants like himself.
Erik pieced the rumors together as he came about them. Finally, —

And this institution that held the mutants, provided the perfect opportunity for him. He would become their savior, but also he would have dedicated followers for his cause.
