The Fading Enchantment of New Mexico: A Year of Hard Lessons in the Land of Enchantment After spending the last year in New Mexico—a place I once loved for its dramatic landscapes, deep cultural roots, artistic spirit, and slower pace of life—I’m left reflecting on how much has shifted. What was once vibrant and full of possibility now often feels like a faded memory. I returned to help a family member in Taos, expecting the familiar rhythms of small-town New Mexico life. Instead, I encountered empty storefronts, unreliable services, personal betrayals, visible social and political divides, structural challenges, and interpersonal dynamics that left me questioning the community fabric. Taos Plaza: From Bustling Hub to Quiet Streets The Taos Plaza was once a lively center where you circled the block repeatedly, hoping for a lucky parking spot amid galleries, shops, restaurants, and locals and visitors mingling. Adobe buildings framed a square that embodied the town’s artistic and tourist energy. Today, many storefronts sit empty or underutilized. While tourism remains important and there are ongoing investments in plaza revitalization and small business support, the on-the-ground energy feels diminished. High commercial rents driven by seasonal tourism, labor shortages, and post-pandemic shifts have squeezed smaller operators. The visible turnover and vacancies contrast sharply with memories of a thriving hub. Caregiving Realities and Broken Trust Helping a sick family member brought practical frustrations into sharp relief. I contacted three cleaning companies for estimates—none showed up. I hired a caregiver who appeared once and then disappeared without further contact. These experiences reflect broader pressures in the state, including low labor force participation and chronic staffing shortages in service and caregiving sectors. Elder care demand is high amid an aging population and dementia cases, yet supply often lags due to pay, burnout, and other factors. Even more painful was discovering that someone close to the family—a supposed friend—had stolen over $30,000. The betrayal was heartbreaking and unfortunately echoes national patterns of elder financial exploitation, which costs older Americans billions annually, often by those in their trusted circle exploiting vulnerabilities like cognitive decline. Protesters, Politics, and the Limits of Slogans One striking observation was the visible presence of protesters, particularly those opposing Trump and administration policies. In a strongly Democratic state with progressive strongholds like Santa Fe, these demonstrations are frequent. It raised questions about depth of engagement versus emotional signaling. New Mexico faces persistent challenges: poverty above national averages, educational lags, substance issues including fentanyl, and heavy reliance on government employment. The public sector (state and federal) comprises a disproportionately large share of jobs. Both major parties have records of fiscal issues, regulatory burdens, and uneven results. Slogans like “tax the billionaires” resonate emotionally but often falter under scrutiny regarding implementation, economic impacts, capital flight (as seen in some European cases), and whether revenue truly reaches average citizens effectively. Nuanced discussion frequently gives way to defensiveness. Mask-Wearing Culture and Evidence on Efficacy Also noticeable in Santa Fe and northern areas was the continued concentration of mask-wearers long after peak pandemic times. While personal health choices deserve respect, the persistence invites evidence-based review.

Not many people know this but coffee intake is associated with lower estrogen levels, as coffee powerfully inhibits the aromatase activity In this study, coffee consumption (5 cups a day, for 8 weeks) increased total testosterone and lowered total and free estrogen. However, decaffeinated coffee, did not have the same effect. Caffeine also increases DHT.

My circle of friends keeps getting smaller and smaller. It feels sad and lonely more often than not but I'm slowly appreciating that it's liberating me from people I thought I had more in common with or don't show me the same respect.
