Improper phone-charging practices have been linked to the outbreak of several fires, prompting Commissioner of the Jamaica Fire Brigade (JFB), Stewart Beckford, to remind members of the public about the importance of exercising caution in the use and maintenance of their devices.
The reminder was issued during an interview with JIS News on Friday, January 23, during which Commissioner Beckford also outlined key recommendations aimed at preventing similar incidents.

A major allocation of $270 million is in place to fully repair the hurricane-battered St. Elizabeth Infirmary in Santa Cruz, over the next five months as the Government moves to restore comfort and safety for the facility’s 46 vulnerable residents.
Minister of Local Government and Community Development, Hon. Desmond McKenzie, told journalists that approximately $250 million has been allocated for repair works at the institution, in addition to some $17 million already spent.
The Ministry was speaking during a visit to the infirmary on Thursday, January 22, to assess the work in progress and meet with staff.

The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management listed Pedro Plains Primary & Infant School and Flagaman Community Centre as shelters up to Monday. Minister McKenzie said an updated list will be published. #GLNRToday #TrackingMelissa

The adjustments come after the projected path of Hurricane Melissa was updated overnight.
