WALTHAM, MA - U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers arrested 28-year-old Gedion Masunsu, an illegal Ugandan immigrant, on January 25 in Waltham following charges of assault and battery on a pregnant victim and destruction of property. Masunsu, who entered the United States illegally, was charged with two counts of assault and battery on a pregnant victim and destruction of property. The Waltham Police Department originally arrested Masunsu on January 6, but despite ICE lodging an immigration detainer with the Waltham District Court, the court failed to honor the detainer, and Masunsu was subsequently released from custody. ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Boston Acting Field Office Director Patricia H. Hyde condemned the incident. “Not only is Gedion Masunsu in this country illegally, he savagely assaulted a pregnant Massachusetts resident, endangering the victim and her unborn child,” said Hyde. “We will not tolerate such acts of violence against the members of our New England communities. ICE stands firm in our commitment to prioritizing public safety by arresting and removing alien offenders from our streets.” Following his recent arrest, Masunsu remains in ICE custody as authorities continue to process his case.

East Bridgewater, MA – After 33 years of dedicated service, East Bridgewater Fire Chief Timothy Harhen has officially retired. Chief Harhen started as a call firefighter in 1991 before joining the department full-time in 1996. Rising through the ranks, he became Lieutenant in 2001, Deputy Chief in 2010, and Acting Fire Chief in 2012. By 2013, he was officially appointed Fire Chief, leading the department with dedication and vision. Throughout his career, Chief Harhen was instrumental in securing over $2 million in grant funding, allowing the department to expand staffing, upgrade equipment, and implement critical infrastructure improvements. He also helped transition the department to regional dispatch at the Holbrook Regional Emergency Communications Center, a process that required significant coordination and perseverance. Among his many accomplishments, Chief Harhen was one of the department’s first paramedics and even delivered two babies while on duty. To celebrate his legacy, the department recently hosted a retirement event attended by his wife, Karen, and their son, Alex, along with colleagues, town officials, and fire chiefs from across the region. Retired Duxbury Fire Chief Kevin Nord has stepped in as interim chief while the search for a permanent replacement continues. “Chief Harhen’s leadership and commitment have left a lasting impact,” said East Bridgewater Town Administrator Charles Seelig. “We are incredibly grateful for his service and wish him the best in his well-earned retirement.”

Massachusetts - Massachusetts State Police Fire Trooper Michael Proctor Following Misconduct Investigation. The Massachusetts State Police have terminated veteran trooper Michael Proctor for misconduct related to his role in the Karen Read investigation. Proctor, who served as the lead investigator in the case, faced a state police trial board that found him guilty on two charges: unsatisfactory performance and violating policy on alcoholic beverages. Massachusetts State Police Col. Geoffrey Noble announced his decision to accept the board’s recommendation on Wednesday. Proctor was initially relieved of duty in July 2024, shortly after Read’s first trial ended in a hung jury. He was subsequently suspended without pay. In a statement, Col. Noble emphasized that maintaining public trust requires accountability within the department and stressed that officers must uphold the agency’s core values. Proctor retains the right to appeal his termination to the Civil Service Commission.
