This weekend, the inaugural edition of the World Ultimate Championships will take place in Budapest. This fast-paced three-day event is scheduled between the Olympic and World Championship cycles and will offer record-breaking prize money to athletes, a move that will ensure that they’re better compensated for their performances. The problem? SEVERAL disciplines have been excluded. These include the 10,000m, 3000m steeplechase, shot put, discus throw, triple jump (men), and hammer throw (women). This decision means that athletes such as Faith Cherotich, Soufiane El Bakkali, Chase Jackson, Rajindra Campbell, Valarie Sion, Mykolas Alekna, Andy Díaz Hernández, and Camryn Rogers (among many others) will miss out on this innovative event and the prize money on offer. For field event athletes in particular, they often struggle to secure sponsorship deals and equal media coverage, and a lot of them would really benefit from the financial and exposure support this event intends to offer. A global governing body that deliberately excludes athletes from their championship event (without providing a logical argument) is incredibly unjust. World Athletics has the power to be inclusive and could have implemented the necessary changes. Instead, the decision was made to actively exclude events. Every athlete works diligently and deserves the right to the same opportunities to compete. Your event within the sport shouldn’t dictate whether you’re considered worthy for additional prize money and exposure—especially in athletics, where we’ve historically been more equal compared to other sports. I’m not sure I like the precedent this sets for the future.
