Today, America celebrates 250 years.
Our history has never been a straight line. It's been shaped by moments of extraordinary progress, painful setbacks, and generations of Americans wrestling with what this country can and should be.
Lincoln spoke these words at one of the nation's darkest moments because he believed our differences didn't have to define our future. Two and a half centuries into the American experiment, that challenge still belongs to us. The next chapter won't be written by people who always agree—it will be written by people willing to stay connected even when they don't.

Earlier this year, Civic Health Project and @ListenFirstProj Project released a white paper documenting the rapid expansion of the bridging movement across the country. From higher education to community institutions, demand for bridge-building and conflict-skills programming is no longer something organizations have to “sell.” Institutions are actively seeking it out.

Today’s shooting of Charlie Kirk is a painful reminder of a truth we must not ignore: political violence is inexcusable, immoral, and beneath our nation. Leaders across the political spectrum have rightly condemned this attack, reinforcing a vital principle: violence has no place in our civic life.
We must also confront the deeper issue behind such acts. When polarization hardens into hatred, it fuels real-world harm. Contemptuous words, framing opponents as enemies, and normalizing dehumanization creates a culture where violence can take root. Disagreement and debate are essential to democracy—but dehumanization and violence are not.
Seeing one another as human first doesn’t require agreement. Strong debate is essential, but it must never cost us safety, respect, or life.

No matter your politics, you should be able to participate in a political conversation on a college campus without risk to your safety.
The whole point of political debate is resolve disputes WITHOUT violence. What happened to Charlie Kirk is simply horrific and sickening. And on a college campus, no less, a place where we should be celebrating speech, not trying to silence it. Everyone in the political arena needs to do some soul searching. None of us want to live in a tinder box.

We need your contributions right now when dollars have shifted toward today's polarizing fights and away from the cultural, relational, and skill-building work required to put our families, communities, and country on a stronger, more prosperous path.

Perhaps the greatest act of patriotism is something we can do every day: start to initiate or rekindle friendships with people with whom we disagree.

"The American people want Democrats and Republicans to work together."
Ideological polarization—or, disagreeing on the issues—is a healthy part of a functioning democracy. Affective polarization—or, hating one another *because* we disagree on the issues—is not.
When we can move beyond this toxic form of polarization, we're able to find solutions to the problems that matter to us most. Kudos to @ProbSolveCaucus for being an example here. 👇
Problem Solvers Caucus Co-Chairs @RepBrianFitz and @RepTomSuozzi sent a letter to President Trump requesting a meeting to discuss opportunities for bipartisan compromise on immigration, permitting reform, and the national debt.
The American people want Democrats and Republicans to work together. We agree on the problems our country is facing — let’s put politics aside and deliver solutions.
