It is important to understand that the phonological features of student’s native languages can impact the ability to learn English. Some English phonemes are not found in other languages. Therefore, these phonemes can be difficult to pronounce and auditorily identify.

These “Mohametans” had several children, including James, who was born just after their arrival. Their youngest son Alexander was born in 1868, one year after Confederation, and secured his spot in history as the first recorded Muslim born in Canada as we know it today.

PWIM (Picture Word Induction Model) is a great strategy for teaching vocabulary and language structure. Students love labelling pictures in shared writing to help with oral and written output. For a digital version, I insert a pic in PicCollage or Slides. #wrdsbMLL #wrdsbOnline

Many new refugee families are arriving from conflict zones and are in need of gently used clothing and footwear, especially kids. The ISK is collecting donations for these families to be distributed via settlement agencies in Kingston that provide care for the newcomers.
