Tom from my building asked me to meet him at a diner. He said he had news. I assumed someone had died. Nobody had died. He slid a photograph across the table. An ultrasound. A small ghost in a gray sea. "We want to ask you something," he said. "We want you to be the godfather." I have learned to expect strange things in this country. I was not expecting this. "I have to tell you," I said, "I am not Catholic. I am not your family. We have known each other fourteen months." "We know." "There must be a better candidate." Tom stirred his coffee for a while. "My brother has three kids and a boat payment and he calls me twice a year. You answer every text. You show up when you say you will. When I moved the washer, you brought your own dolly. I made a list of the men I know, and you were at the top of it, and it was not close." I still do not know what a boat payment is. I researched the role the way I research everything. It is an old oath. At the baptism, the godfather speaks for the child, who cannot yet speak. And should the worst arrive — should the parents be taken — the godfather steps forward. In my country we would call this a retainer's vow. I have been training for this role my whole life without knowing its name. At the church, the priest asked if I reject evil. "I DO," I said. My voice carried. A baby in the third row woke up. Tom's wife was laughing and crying at the same time, which I am told is common at these events, and which I have chosen to believe. Afterward, on the church steps, I asked Tom the real question. Why me. There are men who have known him longer, men who share his faith, men who understand boat payments. He thought about it. "You take everything seriously," he said. "That's the whole job." I have spent years in this country being too much. Too formal. Too grave. Too careful with small things. I have watched people smile at it, and I have been grateful for the smile, and I have known what the smile meant. And then a man handed me his daughter — on paper, in a church, against the worst day of his life — because of it. Her name is June. She cannot speak. For now, I speak for her. I keep the ultrasound in my wallet. It is a strange photograph. It looks like weather. It is my favorite thing I own.

When I worked in behavioral health comms, someone told me something I’ll never forget: “You always hear, ‘If you need anything, let me know.’ But in my darkest days, I could not reach out. I needed someone to reach in.” A reminder to look deeper. ❤️👇🏻

Arrived home late to the most delicious-smelling house.
Me (later, in bed): “Thanks for making dinner… even though I kinda threw it up.”
Hubby: “That’s the worst compliment I’ve ever received.” Takeaway: Never suppress a generous thought. Also, brown poultry meat is hard.

“Recent reductions in foreign aid — not just from the United States but also from many of the world’s wealthiest countries — could lead to many unfortunate outcomes. Among these could be a resurgence in the preventable deaths of children.”
For the first time in the 21st century, deaths of children under 5 are expected to rise. Slashing foreign aid now threatens decades of progress in global health. Read more: deseret.com/opinion/2025/12/…

An intense two-year exercise regimen, consisting of 5-6 hours per week, reversed up to 20 years of age-related structural changes and stiffness in the hearts of sedentary 50-year-olds. The heart gets stiffer and shrinks, starting around age 50 to 65. Once you reach age 70, it is very challenging to change the heart’s structure (although there are other benefits to exercise). Here’s the 2-year protocol, totaling 5-6 hours per week that Dr. Levine and colleagues used: • Norwegian 4x4 Interval Training: Weekly sessions began with four minutes of high-intensity activity at 95% peak heart rate, followed by three minutes at 60%-75% peak heart rate, repeated four times. • Recovery Day Aerobics: Light 20-30 minute aerobic exercise. • Endurance Building: An hour (or more) per week of endurance exercises and a separate 30-minute base pace session. • Strength Training: Twice weekly. This episode is a must-watch. It reveals surprising and lesser-known facts about the heart and explores how different exercises uniquely affect cardiac health. Available wherever you consume podcasts. Full episode: youtu.be/qMs145DJyb0?si=FL2k…
Dr. Benjamin Levine is a legend in the field of exercise physiology He ran a study you should know about... Here's the low-down: As we age, the heart tends to get smaller and stiffer This impacts its efficiency, reducing exercise capacity and potentially elevating heart failure risk But remarkably... 2 years of vigorous exercise in sedentary 50-year-olds reversed some of the heart's age-related structural changes and stiffness by up to 20 years Meaning... exercise gave these sedentary 50-year-olds hearts akin to those of 30-year-olds That's the power of exercise Astonishing, really

Emotion regulation is not about controlling what you feel. It's about choosing how you respond. Wise people don't suppress emotion. They find constructive ways to express it. Intense feelings don't always demand immediate reactions. They often benefit from deep reflection.

A mark of emotional maturity is hearing disagreement without taking offense. Thoughtful dissent doesn't always mean you're wrong. It often means the issue is complex and your knowledge is incomplete. Good-faith debate isn't an attack. It's an opportunity to sharpen your ideas.

I got my curls straightened this week. My husband and son HATE it while our exchange student said, “It doesn’t look as bad as I thought it would.” Being in a house with all boys is a real confidence boost.
