I've learned that sometimes the block button is more productive than arguing with someone who keeps moving the goalposts and has no intention of learning anything. They can celebrate their imaginary victory. I'll have forgotten they existed by breakfast.
Women are actually far less likely to get bystander CPR, so it’s fortunate this patient survived.
So it wasn’t the long haired teen, and wasn’t trans. Sorry to disappoint some slobbering homophobes.
Here’s what’s known about John J. Griffin.
His mother should be charged. She acknowledged he had social issues but still allowed a gun in the home poorly secured or unsecured and is declining to explain how he got the gun.
Point-by-point details on John J. Griffin II:
• 16 years old (born August 20, 2010).
• Lived in Bend, Oregon, in the Old Farm District neighborhood near Silver Rail Elementary School.
• Identified by law-enforcement sources and multiple news outlets as the suspect in the October 15, 2026, shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend.
• Name appears in reports as John J. Griffin II, John Griffin II, or Griffin J. John II (police and some local sources used the latter form).
• Previously attended Silver Rail Elementary School.
• Was a student in the special-needs / special-education classroom at the school.
• In 2020 (around age 10), participated in the High Desert Education Service District and Bend-La Pine Schools NEST program (“Nurturing Empathy, Safety and Trust”) for students with intensive behavioral and social-skills challenges.
• Appeared with his mother in a 2020 KTVZ news report about the NEST program and return to in-person learning after pandemic remote schooling; mother said he struggled with remote learning and needed the specialized support.
• Mother’s name: Shauntai Nickerson (also reported as Shauntai May Nickerson).
• Used a 12-gauge Maverick 88 pump-action shotgun in the attack.
• The shotgun was reportedly purchased by his mother around the time of his August birthday.
• Approached the school on foot.
• Shot multiple times at a vehicle outside the school (striking it several times).
• Threw the shotgun over the school fence, then climbed over the fence.
• Forced entry into the school by shooting through locked doors / window panes on a door.
• Entered the special-needs classroom where he had previously been a student.
• Opened fire inside that classroom (reported as roughly 15 rounds with birdshot, buckshot, and slugs).
• Killed three children (ages 5, 8, and 11) and one teacher.
• Critically injured a 7-year-old student and a 54-year-old teacher.
• Was in a physical altercation with another teacher in the classroom when he was shot.
• Was shot and killed inside the school by armed bystander Kaylub Giamanco (a father of two students at the school who was nearby).
• A backpack was found near him along with the shotgun and remaining ammunition (reports mention dozens of additional rounds).
• Not currently enrolled in Bend-La Pine schools.
• Investigators searched the home and seized electronic devices (computers, phones, etc.).
• Motive remains under investigation; authorities are reviewing online activity, social media, and possible interest in violence or prior mass shootings.
• A photo of him with his mother by a river, posted on Facebook by his mother on September 10, 2026, has been widely circulated as one of the first public images.
• Mother spoke to reporters outside her apartment on October 16: described him as “a good boy,” said she misses him, expressed sorrow, and stated she wished she could have prevented it; she has been described as cooperative with investigators and declined to detail how he obtained the gun.
Marfa, TX is on my revisit list. We did go a few years ago but somehow they were still stuck in covidian land. Perhaps now it’s normal-ish.
Prada Marfa. Highway 90, west of Marfa, Texas.
It is not a store. It has never sold anything. Nobody has ever bought shoes there.
Artists Elmgreen and Dragset built it in 2005 with Prada's blessing. The company sent shoes and handbags from its fall collection. Every shoe in the window is a right shoe.
Within three days, somebody broke in, took everything worth taking, and spray-painted "Dumb" and "Dum Dum" on the walls.
They restocked it, reinforced the glass, and locked the door for good. Texas later tried to have it torn down as an illegal billboard. It survived by becoming a museum with exactly one exhibit. In 2014 a man painted the whole building blue and hung Toms logos on the awnings.
The artists never wanted it maintained. The idea was to let the desert take it back, one year at a time.
Twenty-one years later it is still out there, full of shoes nobody can buy and nobody could wear as a pair anyway.
I took this at sunrise on my way out of town. Marfa had given me a ticket on that trip, for failing to come to a complete stop at a stop sign on a dirt road. I called the court and reached a judge named Cinderella, who told me if I sent $100 it would all go away and never be on my record.
I sent the $100.
saw a DC-10 flying over today. Don't see those very often. Turns out it's N974VV, an Omega Air Tanker DC-10. No idea why it's in Sacramento. Maybe a weird taco run. Who knows.
He's absolutely right. I deleted my old mastodon account today after reading this post. I took a look at the feed and it was essentially "fuck AI, fuck Trump, fuck Musk, X is awful." And that's with no algorithm either. The Fediverse is unhinged. Bsky/Threads folks seem either miserable or ragebaity.
Even I can be a jackass on X, but the vibe here has improved *a lot.*
I’m sure this one won’t make anyone angry. (But probably not here.)

Well, it was a nice day. Now I’m downwind of the break time smoke pack. Cigarettes are so disgusting. 🤢🤮

I added a box to the time period, starting with the Bruen decision, where gun control groups started constantly saying that crime was going to increase and the country became less safe:
