๐ŸšจThe timing of this article could hardly be more relevant. Todayโ€™s closure of the Hamada valve by Zintani forces stems from the same Waha Oil Company leadership dispute that triggered the previous shutdown, following Mohamed Dabaibaโ€™s move to replace Wahaโ€™s leadership in an effort to undermine Ibrahim Dabaiba. This piece takes readers behind the scenes of the GNU, revealing just how fragile its alliances have become and the wider implications of the family feud for Libyaโ€™s political stability and oil sector. #OOTT

๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ณ PROTESTS TAKE SHAPE IN TUNIS A national protest is taking shape in Tunis today, bringing together Tunisiaโ€™s powerful UGTT labour union and eight other national organisations spanning journalists, lawyers, students and civil society. The mobilisation reflects growing frustration over economic hardship, purchasing power, unemployment and concerns over civil liberties. For Tunisian authorities, the challenge is no longer just managing isolated grievances, but responding to a broader coalition bringing social and political discontent into the streets.

GIGโ€™s Libya Desk has published a special edition of its weekly political risk assessment on @thegeopoldesk. While attention remains fixed on political manoeuvring and the prospect of a unity government, a potentially greater threat is being overlooked: Libyaโ€™s increasingly volatile public mood. A collapsing dinar, escalating union strikes and mounting economic hardship are pushing public frustration towards a tipping point. Our assessment: Libya is closer to a political settlement than it has been in years, but the window to prevent widespread popular unrest is rapidly closing. A must-read for policymakers, businesses and anyone monitoring developments in Libya.

๐Ÿšจ ๐Ÿ‡ฑ๐Ÿ‡พ As Libyaโ€™s dinar breaches 10 to the dollar, the CBL and NOC trade accusations, offering little in the way of solutions. A perfect metaphor for Libyaโ€™s predicament: an economy in free fall, a population struggling to make ends meet, and the very institutions responsible for the countryโ€™s economic lifelines busy bickering. Meanwhile, union strikes continue to hold firm against the GNU. Public frustration is mounting, and the conditions for a wider eruption of civil unrest are increasingly taking shape. Libyaโ€™s public mood warrants close attention.

๐Ÿšจ Dr. Mohamed remains in captivity, with multiple sources in Tripoli identifying Abdulmajid Mlegta, Libyaโ€™s self-described intelligence chief, as responsible for his abduction. Despite the serious risks of escalation, there has been no public statement from @UNSMILibya or @stephaniekoury1. The longer his detention continues, the greater the risk of retaliatory action and a wider escalation.
๐Ÿ‡ฑ๐Ÿ‡พ On Monday morning, 5 October, the family of Dr. Mohamed Sharf al-Dine, a prominent university professor, issued a public plea following his disappearance in Tripoli on Sunday night, 4 October. His car and phones were later found, but he remains missing. Dr Mohamed Sharf al-Dine is a civilian with no political affiliation to either side of Libyaโ€™s divide. There is speculation in political circles that he may have been kidnapped because of his familial relations to key actors, potentially as a means of exerting political pressure. Neither the circumstances of his disappearance nor any alleged motive have been confirmed. His disappearance comes as relations between eastern and western Libya deteriorate and spoilers intensify efforts to derail the 4+4 agreement and the American initiative. If these suspicions prove accurate, targeting an innocent civilian over his family ties would mark a dangerous and reckless escalation, risking retaliation and a rise in tensions that could prove difficult to reverse, extending far beyond the breakdown of political talks. Actors in Tripoli and eastern Libya have been working intensively since Monday to establish what happened and prevent the situation from spiralling into wider unrest. The case remains severely underreported, but behind the scenes it is quickly emerging as one of the most serious fault lines between eastern and western Libya.

Dr. Mohamed has been released, with Mlegta confirmed as responsible for his kidnapping. As sanctions against political spoilers gain traction, the incident has drawn international attention to Mlegta, particularly over concerns that his actions could trigger wider escalation.
