This is an amazing speech. A true novelistโs takedown. Empathy as satire. Essential viewing.
WATCH Zadie Smith's full speech as she dismantles the motivations & methods of @cmackinlay & the Tufton St denialists.

Overheard:
โNot interested in โdefense of poetryโ argument. Poetry is a primal ancient force and art form. It has been here long before our individual lifetimes & will stay long after.
What we need is to defend ourselves *with* it. A tune to walk to as long as one still walksโ

Yes, this is Odessa, and yes it's in the middle of war. These sandbags in the background are preparation for the invasion.

Being deaf, people ask me about silence a lot.
And, now we are all watching--yes, in silence--a 30 mile long convoy heading to kill civilians.
That kind of silence.
So, let me say it once again, in real time:
Deaf do not believe in silence. It is the creation of the hearing.
