A Promise Made, A Promise Kept: Securing Staff Welfare and Academic Stability in Our Tertiary Institutions.
For too long, unresolved agreements and industrial disputes have disrupted academic calendars, forcing students to spend five, six or even seven years completing four-year programmes. Following our landmark ASUU Agreement, today we took another decisive step towards ending this cycle.
I am pleased to have unveiled 12 Federal Government Agreements with Academic and Non-Academic Staff Unions across universities, polytechnics and colleges of education, covering ASUP, COEASU, SSANU, NASU, NAAT, SSANIP, NOTSUP and SSUCOEN.
Like the ASUU Agreement, the 12 agreements introduce the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) and Consolidated Non-Teaching Tools Allowance (CONTTA), effective 1 January 2026, with strengthened oversight to ensure full implementation.
Beyond staff welfare, these agreements will support uninterrupted learning, more effective institutional management and improved academic stability. Together with our proposed Nigeria Higher Education Ranking and Assessment Classification (NHERAC), we are laying the foundation for stronger, more accountable tertiary institutions.
I commend the unions and the negotiating committee, chaired by Alhaji Yayale Ahmed, CFR, and thank President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for his leadership in making this milestone possible.
Our goal is simple: better-supported staff, better-run institutions and students who graduate on time.
A four-year course must be a four-year course. A promise made. A promise kept.

Happy Children’s Day to every child across Nigeria! 💚🤍💚
Today, we celebrate the voices, dreams, and limitless potential of our young people.
Under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu @officialABAT, GCFR, we remain committed to ensuring every child has access to quality education and the opportunity to thrive. Ensuring the safety, protection, and wellbeing of every Nigerian child is a top priority of the Federal Government, as we continue strengthening efforts to provide safe, inclusive, and protected learning environments for all children, regardless of background or location.
As part of this year’s celebration, we welcomed our young Honourable Minister of Education for the Day, Dera Osadebe, who stepped into leadership with confidence, curiosity, and brilliance. We also held a special roundtable with children from different schools and backgrounds.
Their voices were inspiring and a powerful reminder that children are not just the leaders of tomorrow, they are stakeholders of today.
