Today is the start of Black History Month. It is a special opportunity to focus on and celebrate the countless Black individuals who have fought for a society that is free, just, and equitable for all.

P is for Pajamas. Someone, @LibraryGeek678 , didn't get the memo 🤣 She does look fancy though! I also had to roll up my PJs because it was TOO HOT for flannel today. Bad call. Only 10 more days left! @eastironms

People love to trash YA fiction without realizing the impact it's having on future leaders who will greatly impact society; who are ALREADY impacting society.
I proudly write for them because I've given up on most of you.

If you call us thugs, you don’t have to call us children. If you call us thugs, you don’t have to call us angry. If you call us thugs, you don’t have to call us heartbroken. If you call us thugs, you don’t have to call us human. You also don’t have to call yourselves complicit.

I've seen several kids’ reading lists, but most include YA books. All titles in this graphic are elementary-appropriate: top 2 rows are all-ages picture books & bottom row is for upper grades. Several are in our school library already & the rest will come in my next order!

I grieve, our staff grieve and our students grieve for #GeorgeFloyd. We must dismantle the racism that exists. EICSD students, please know that you are loved and that we are committed to making all of your futures bright.

I really, really don’t care what you think. I went to a PWI. I watched white students at the University of Maryland set fire and go on a rampage every time they beat Duke in BASKETBALL. No pain. No anger. And they were NEVER called thugs. EVER.

There is justice. There is injustice. There is no neutrality. No sideline. No bleachers. No exits.
We are all in the human rights struggle to save humanity from human tyranny. Black people, especially, are struggling for the right to live, for the right to breathe.

Children's books are not a luxury.
The teachers who work so hard to inspire the love of reading are not a luxury.
Libraries & librarians are not a luxury.
Lose these things – and #literacy itself will become a luxury, not a basic human right.
