Medicine used to be the art and science of healing. Care was personal, continuous, and built on relationships. A family doctor knew a patient and their family from the cradle to the grave and often saw them in their own home. With the rise of germ theory, antibiotics, and vaccines in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, medicine hardened into a more rigid science. The aim became simple: identify the pathogen or the ailment, apply the cure, and eradicate the disease. The era we live in now belongs to the system and the industry. By the late twentieth century, the word “medicine” had largely given way to “healthcare.” That change marked a shift from a calling to a bureaucracy. Healing and relationships were replaced by protocols and efficiency. What got lost was not the science. What got lost was the thing that used to hold the science in place: a doctor who knew you, and the time to use that knowledge. Healing didn’t disappear overnight. It was slowly replaced by a process. And the relationship between doctor and patient was the last thing the process had room for. The ultimate casualty was the bond between doctor and patient. The sacred trust that the medicine was based on.
