Changing the law retrospectively is a very dangerous path for any government to follow. To criminalise what an individual believed to be legal behaviour at the time undermines the whole principle of the rule of law. If the law is not clear, accessible and known in advance of any actions we take then we enter the realm of arbitrary justice which is the hallmark of dictators and tyrants. The huge donations given to Reform UK raise genuine questions about whether we want to have a complete laissez faire approach to political fundraising or whether we want some restrictions at an individual, constituency or party level. Do we want an American system where money is the dominant political influence or a nanny state which restricts our freedom to do what we want with our own money, or do we seek some equilibrium between the two? This is a massively important debate for our democracy but knee jerk reactions designed to punish individual actions or parties create not only dangerous precedents but represent a frightening view of our potential future.

The British Civil Service has grown by around 100,000 employees since Covid to reach a total of over 557,000. The total cost including salaries, pensions and national insurance cost between £25 and £28 billion annually. Andy Burnham is proposing to increase the amount of government Britain has to fund and endure, while failing to meet the 3% GDP target for defence. What a warped sense of priorities.
