If there’s a treaty on AI weapons one day, Alexander Kmentt will be one of the reasons why. The Austrian diplomat has spent 25 years in disarmament. He worked on the landmine ban and was a central figure behind the treaty prohibiting nuclear weapons. In 2024 he brought 144 states to Vienna and led Austria’s push to take talks on autonomous weapons to the UN General Assembly. Even now, with international law under pressure, he keeps going.
