I feel similarly when I see people saying "I use AI to generate all this annoying boilerplate that X / Y / Z system requires". Ok but why is there so much boilerplate? Surely it's better to get rid of it than to spend billions in GPU compute papering over it for the rest of time?

I don't wanna hear y'all talking about blur effects...and corner radii. I don't care about any of that.... YA HEARD?
Y'all want beautiful design? Nah. BUMP THAT.
I wanna see a big button... with big fonts, and big shadows... BEING CLICKED.

A perpetual problem: the more visible activity there is, the more impressive the work looks. Ten years ago people were building unnecessary distributed systems, with >1:1 microservice:dev ratio, that could've been simple monoliths. The same thing is happening with "factories".

So who were the Normans? A mongrel race of Norse Vikings and Frankish Gauls?
If every ethnic group ceases to be an ethnic group as soon as we can identify the populations that contributed to its formation, then ethnic groups don’t exist. For a Spectator writer (ie ostensibly conservative) to make this claim is remarkable; it’s essentially embracing the postmodern proposition that there are no real categories, only constructed discourses.

If so, why is no one sharing this new skillset?
Are we really arguing that agentic development cannot be formalized into a body of knowledge, with principles, techniques and practices that can be taught?
If these skills are real, they should be describable. What are they?

hot take: i’m convinced most CRMs still have the wrong data model
the People object is always messy because it tries to merge the person + their current experience into one record
People should be the identity
Experience should be a separate object linked to Accounts
would make CRM hygiene, job changes and signal tracking way easier

A general piece of advice for not just programming but most other problem solving: always favour subtraction over addition. You should always try to get the job done by taking something away first, and only if that isn’t working resort to adding something new.

“I have seen an executive confess that they had never even used ChatGPT or any AI tool in their life, immediately after producing a technical strategy for an organisation with $2 B+ in revenue which was entirely centered around AI”
An interesting write up from someone who runs a software consultancy and is consistently seeing companies fail to get value out of AI despite eye watering investments.

2070: React, Node, git are still ubiquitous. AI moved us up a level, and the lower levels ossified as usual. Most programmers have never thought about alternatives; a few deify the people who made them; a very few lament what could've been. The story of Unix, all over again.

Every BEAM dev learns the rule: avoid NIFs. But sometimes you have to go native.
Zig won't put native code back under the supervisor. It turns the segfault into an error you can pattern match on.
