The S&P 500 is closing in on a new all-time high. Remember, it has been nearly two years since it hit an ATH. I found 14 previous times it went at least a yr without one and then finally made one. Higher a yr later 13 times and up 14.9% on avg. New highs aren't bearish.

Want to upset your favorite ๐Ÿป? Tell them that when the S&P 500 gains >10% in Nov and December (like '23 will), the returns the following year get even ๐Ÿ’ช. Q1 and the following year returns have never been lower. In fact, following yr up close to 20% on avg.

S&P 500 has finished green in 13 of the last 15 U.S. Presidential Election years with an average gain of 10%. The only 2 times the $SPX finished in the red were the Global Financial Crisis and the Dot Com Bubble. Exclude those events and the average yearly gain is 15%.

Need another reason to expect higher prices in '24? The S&P 500 is currently up 8 weeks in a row. One year after previous 8-wk win streaks saw stocks higher 16 out of 18 times. One yr ago we noted many reasons we expected a good '23 and we still see >positives than negatives.

The US 60/40 portfolio is up 15% since it was declared dead in late October, one of its strongest short-term rallies in history. Since 1996: only Mar-May 2020, Mar-Apr 2009, & Oct-Dec 1998 had higher performance. All three came off of bear market lows.

The S&P 500 is 0.59% away from a new all-time high. Take note, ATHs tend to happen in bull markets and shouldn't be feared. In fact, when it goes more than a yr without one, did you know things get even better? Higher a yr later 13 out of 14 times (92.9%) and up 14.9% on avg.

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ Dow Jones Historically, when the Dow Jones has reached new highs following a period of more than a year without achieving such levels, it has seen a significant increase in value of around 14% a year later ๐Ÿ‘‰ isabelnet.com/blog/ h/t @RyanDetrick #dow #dowjones $djia

Bullish
Looking at the previous 12 times (since WWII) the Dow went at least a full yr without a new ATH and then made one, a recession started within one yr only twice. Nov '72 new ATH and recession started Nov '73 Aug '89 new ATH and recession started July '90 What is interesting about those two times is both saw oil spikes due to Middle East turmoil, which likely pushed us into a recession. Given the US now produces more oil than anyone (drastically different than previous decades), could that really happen again?

Here's the S&P so far during Biden's Presidential Election Cycle versus the average path the S&P has taken during all prior election cycles since 1928. Amazing how close the two are at this point closing in on the end of year 3. Almost up the exact same amount.

S&P 500 up 19.9% for the year with the historically bullish second half of December coming up. Last time stocks gained >20% ('21) they fell 19.4% the next year. Or you could say it was up the 7 times before that and up a solid 16.8% on avg. Pick a narrative.
