Back from a trip to #HK that was cut short by #coronavirus. Instead of more than a month of hoped-for exchanges w/ #HKers, I spent 9 days in an N95 mask in a city beset w/ anxiety. And guess what? HK is GLORIOUS all the same. Look forward to returning under better circumstances.

Anyone who thinks "the US working class" was or is made up of people who agreed about anything besides wanting more good things for themselves and their children does not understand US history
The US working class has a long tradition of standing against immigrant repression. This history is a reservoir of inspiration and strategic thinking — and it can help immigrant workers and communities confront Donald Trump’s promised wave of repression. jacobin.com/2024/12/deportat…

That Andreessen guy I wrote about who literally says the world's worst crisis is the regulation of tech, and "joked" that he was glad for oxy to keep the rabble in line? Forgot to mention the time he said world population will collapse once men can fuck realistic AI sex dolls.

Beijing is offering another new set of evidence - undermining a coastal state’s sovereign rights to conduct marine scientific research in its legitimate EEZ - that’ll come in handy for a planned new legal challenge by Manila. Speaking of smashing your own feet with a rock. 🤷🏻‍♂️
BFAR Vessels Face Harassment from Chinese Coast Guard and PLAN Helicopter During Scientific Survey The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), supported by the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), has reported an alarming incident involving harassment faced by its patrol vessels, BRP Datu Pagbuaya and BRP Datu Bankaw, while en route to Sandy Cays for a marine scientific survey and sand sampling on January 24, 2025. During the mission, the BFAR vessels encountered aggressive maneuvers from three Chinese Coast Guard vessels 4106, 5103 and 4202, which exhibited blatant disregard for the Convention on the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea, 1972 (COLREGs). Fortunately, the skilled seamanship of the BFAR crew prevented any potential accidents during these dangerous confrontations. In addition to the actions of the Coast Guard vessels, four small boats were deployed by the Chinese Coast Guard to harass the two BFAR rigid hull inflatable boats (RHIBs) that were transporting personnel to the Sandy Cays. Compounding the situation, a People’s Liberation Army-Navy (PLAN) helicopter, identified by tail number 24, hovered at an unsafe altitude above the BFAR RHIBs, creating hazardous conditions due to the propeller wash. As a result of this continuous harassment and the disregard for safety exhibited by the Chinese maritime forces, BFAR and PCG have regrettably suspended their survey operations and were unable to collect sand samples at Sandy Cays. Both BFAR and PCG remain committed to their mandates and will take all necessary precautions to ensure the safety of their personnel and vessels in the pursuit of scientific research and resource management.

I remain extremely put-off by the🇺🇸 zeal to present the newly-elected Prez & First Lady as royalty on #InaugurationDay. At least Rosalyn Carter bought this designer schmatte at a dept store & wore it twice before wearing it a 3rd time for the inaugural ball. #SustainableFashion

Yes, an oligarchy of billionaires running the country would be (and is) bad news. But history, especially from Africa, Latin America and former Soviet Republics, shows that even worse would be an autocrat weakening institutions and controlling the oligarchs as well as the state apparatus. We have a lot to worry about.
When I started talking about Oligarchy, many people didn't understand what I meant. Well, that's changed. When the 3 wealthiest men in America sit behind Trump at his inauguration, everyone understands that the billionaire class now controls our government. We must fight back.

💯piece all the way through. "The current lack of🇺🇸 strategy has produced—or at least it has not prevented—the very end state which policymakers feared a more proactive approach would bring about: Western inattention has encouraged greater🇨🇳 involvement in #Myanmar, not less."
In a new commentary for our Myanmar project, @hmarston4 highlights how the incoming Trump administration can both review and revise current US policy strategy in #Myanmar as well as the challenges that lie ahead. Read the full commentary 👇 stimson.org/2025/rethinking-…

My all-time fav quote about books comes from Kafka: "A book must be the ax for the frozen sea within us." (#DavidLynch, I think, did that for film)
#BOOKOLOGYTHURSDAY A good book can change the course of your life. It can make you view reality differently & open the door to wisdom. It can enchant, haunt or leave you in tears. A good book stays with us forever, in the library of memory. (book plate art: Richardo Opisso)

Both sides of the discourse on ‘socialism’ & ‘National Socialism’ tend to get it wrong. Hitler &National Socialists were neither leftwing nor socialist in any conventional way. Yet their self-designation as “socialists” was far more than a marketing trick dw.com/de/faktencheck-warum-…

2/ Strasser records that indeed Hitler considered himself a nationalist socialist &anti-capitalist; but Strasser lays out how Hitler rejected socialism as conventionally conceived.More than that, Strasser insists that Hitler wanted to keep the capitalist order essentially intact:

Ironic since, acc to one site, "Soviet collectivization in E. Armenia shattered the rug weaving traditions." Also ironic insofar as depicting Armenian rug making as a secular act of production emptied the practice of its traditional sacred significance, i.e. its Armenianness.
Meet the Caucasian Rug that is single-handedly DESTROYING commodity fetishism as we know it
