IISS Director-General and Chief Executive, Dr Bastian Giegerich, sets the scene for this year's deliberations at the IISS Prague Defence Summit, noting that European defence has entered a new era, one defined not just by surging demand for military capabilities and defence industrial capacity, but by the need to translate significant investment into tangible results for the defence of Europe. 🔗 Full Speaker Agenda out now: go.iiss.org/4hxAVJN #IISS_PDS26 | Find out more: go.iiss.org/PDS26

Israel has increasingly relied on AI-enabled systems to wage war across the region, particularly in Palestine. These systems are enabled by Israeli- and US-headquartered tech corporations. As military-commercial partnerships grow in scope and nature, and as Israel faces political and legal scrutiny over its conduct of military operations, the absence of regulation over the role of commercial entities in defence partnerships is attracting attention. In this episode of The Assessment, Charlie Edwards, @emile_hokayem and Elliot Hentov (@hentove) probe an AI forecast suggesting that it is unlikely that major carriers will announce a full resumption of services through the Strait of Hormuz before the end of the year. They explore Iran's 17 August fee deadline, the insurance and mine-clearance bottlenecks and what a semi-permanent Cape detour would mean for global trade. Listen now: go.iiss.org/45vCYrX

Following mass protests, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has replaced Oleksandr Syrskyi with Mykhailo Drapatyi as chief of Ukraine’s armed forces. The outcome augurs well for Ukraine’s conduct of the war and its domestic stability. Read the latest analysis by Dr Nigel Gould-Davies (@Nigelgd1): go.iiss.org/4ffCOe4

My area of interest now: this - one of the most widely reported on IISS reports so far this year:
It is highly likely that the Kremlin conducted a coordinated Uninhabited Aerial Vehicle (UAV) campaign over Europe. Germany recorded the largest number of incidents of any European country, with 58 reported UAV sightings between August 2024 and February 2026. ✏️ Charlie Edwards, Rex Fox O'Loughlin & Louis Bearn For a full breakdown of incidents, read the report: go.iiss.org/4gPP7Pg

A story I spent years covering “ends” in a bigger Leicester, smaller Leicestershire and, err, no Rutland at all…again?! Sometimes I do miss local politics…but only sometimes.

Out now: Contending with American Exceptionalism by Kori Schake For the past 80 years, much of the world has been structured around the order Washington built out of the ashes of the Second World War. But for many Americans and observers of America, the second administration of President Donald Trump has been deeply disquieting, with widespread concerns that his presidency will undermine much of what has made America exceptional and successful at home and abroad.    Find out more: go.iiss.org/4sP60MH
