In September of 2013, Disney closed the doors on Pirates of the Caribbean Online. For most games, that’s the end of the story. But this one? This one refused to die... When Disney walked away in 2013, the game's community never actually moved on. This is our story... 1/10

Pirates, we're in port for repairs. TLOPO is temporarily down for maintenance while we scrub the deck and mend the sails. We expect this to take a few days. Our small volunteer team is working behind the scenes to complete this update as soon as possible. NOTE: We will be extending Hollowed Woods by the full duration of the maintenance. Thank you for your patience. We're grateful for everyone's continued support.

One of the most important breakthroughs in TLOPO history began with us deleting years of our own work. We had successfully brought Pirates Online back, but the code underneath it was struggling to support the tens of thousands of players waiting to return. If TLOPO was going to survive, we had to rebuild the remake. Much of that early code had been written while we were teenagers teaching ourselves how to build an MMO. It carried TLOPO through its earliest days, but the project had grown far beyond anything we originally prepared for. Every new player placed more pressure on systems that were already reaching their limits. Bugs became harder to fix, updates became riskier, and the road to Open Beta depended on a foundation that could support an entire community. So we made the painful decision to start over. Throughout early 2017, our developers rewrote most of TLOPO's backend with stronger infrastructure, better development standards, and enough room for the game to continue growing. Players mostly saw delays, restrictions, and plenty of Soon™. Behind the scenes, we were replacing the machinery that kept the Caribbean running. Throwing away years of work was terrifying, but holding onto it would have placed TLOPO's entire future at risk. That rewrite helped make Open Beta possible and became the foundation for nearly everything that followed. We had already rebuilt Pirates Online once. To give it a future, we had to prove we were willing to rebuild it again. #pirates #nostalgia #pcgaming #gaming #piratelife

The most dangerous obstacle in early TLOPO was not Jolly Roger, the Navy, or a ship full of enemies. It was the line outside the Caribbean, where hundreds of pirates waited for enough room to log in. Before Open Beta, players reserved three-hour sessions through a system called PlayTimes. In June 2017, we replaced it with a live, first-come, first-served queue. Everyone rushed it on the first day. Some players entered around position 130. Others found more than 230 pirates ahead of them. One player waited roughly 40 minutes, while guilds watched their events fall apart as half the crew got inside and the rest remained stuck at the launcher. It was messy, crowded, and extremely early TLOPO. Three months later, Open Beta arrived and the line finally disappeared. Who remembers watching that queue number slowly crawl down? #pirates #nostalgia #pcgaming #gaming

Years before Melissa McCarthy became one of Hollywood's biggest comedy stars, she and her husband Ben Falcone quietly appeared together in a Pirates of the Caribbean Online promotional video. The appearance comes from "The Making of the Game... Sort Of!," a comedy series created as marketing material to promote Pirates Online in 2007. Despite its name, it was not a traditional behind-the-scenes documentary. Instead of polished developer interviews explaining how the game was created, the series imagined what would happen if actual pirates were forced to work inside a real corporate office. The result was complete chaos. Employees attempted to hold meetings, deliver presentations, discuss deadlines, and maintain some resemblance of workplace professionalism while surrounded by pirates who had absolutely no interest in behaving professionally. Corporate life and Caribbean chaos collided in one of the strangest and funniest pieces of Pirates Online marketing ever created. Seeing McCarthy and Falcone appear together makes the video even more incredible today. This was years before their famous scene together in Bridesmaids and long before they became one of Hollywood’s most recognizable comedy couples. It is a hilarious little piece of Pirates Online history, made even better by two familiar faces hiding in plain sight for nearly two decades. Did anyone else recognize them? #MelissaMcCarthy #BenFalcone #PiratesOfTheCaribbean #pirates #nostalgia

This warms our hearts. Jared Butler provided the voice of Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean Online, and we are incredibly grateful for his kind words. Thank you, Jared, for lending your talent to a game that still means so much to so many people. We are honored to preserve Pirates Online, and your unforgettable work, for future generations of players.

There was a time when video game marketing did not take itself so seriously. To promote Pirates Online, the team skipped the polished developer interviews and made a workplace sitcom about pirates causing chaos inside a corporate office. The series was called "The Making of the Game" and the title was completely honest. It had almost nothing to do with how the game was actually made. Instead, it imagined a world where unruly pirates had somehow been hired to work ordinary corporate jobs. Meetings, presentations, deadlines, and workplace etiquette immediately collapsed under the weight of pirate logic. That clash between corporate professionalism and complete Caribbean chaos was what made it so funny. Every serious attempt to discuss the game became another excuse for the pirates to argue or turn the office into a disaster. It was ridiculous, self-aware, and packed with the kind of personality that made Pirates Online feel different from every other game of its era. Nearly two decades later, the series feels like a time capsule from an era when marketing could be strange simply because someone thought it would be funny. Who else remembers watching "The Making of the Game"? #pirates #nostalgia #pcgaming #gaming #trailer

An entire Pirates of the Caribbean Online story nearly vanished without anyone knowing it existed. The Headstone was never released by the original developers, but a complete cutscene survived deep within the files of the discontinued online game. For years, The Headstone existed as a rumor. Audio from an unknown cutscene had surfaced, but without visuals, nobody knew what they were hearing or whether anything more had ever been built. Then, buried in the game's files, we found the animation. It did not answer one question. It opened ten more. The scene revealed The Headstone was not a discarded name or stray recording. It belonged to a much larger storyline that had vanished before release. And traces of it were everywhere. Old dialogue, unused assets, environmental details, and buried lore had been pointing toward the same story for years. Once we knew what to look for, the pattern became impossible to ignore. We followed every clue. We built an entire quest line around the evidence left behind, treating each surviving detail as part of a map. Nothing was added casually. Every scene, character, and reveal had to fit the story the original developers had already begun. A rumor hidden in old audio led us to a lost animated scene, then to an entire chapter nobody knew existed. We brought that chapter to life and released it for players to experience. You can play The Headstone in The Legend of Pirates Online now in 2026. #gaming #nostalgia #MMORPG #pirates #2000s

The best childhood games never truly leave you. Their worlds stay enormous in your memory, filled with places, characters, and adventures that helped shape who you became. When we first set out to recreate Pirates of the Caribbean Online, that was exactly what we intended to do... recreate the world exactly as we remember it. We wanted to bring back the islands, quests, battles, and memories players lost when the original game closed. We never expected that we would eventually be adding entirely new adventures of our own. However, we were given the opportunity to do something else entirely. We could add something new that would become one of those memories. That raised a terrifying question. How do you expand one of the greatest pirate games of all time without ruining what made it special? How do you follow a legacy as enormous and spectacular as Pirates of the Caribbean? Throughout 2017, our team quietly began attempting something we had never done before. We designed an original location, wrote a new storyline, created characters, enemies, bosses, weapons, and dozens of new items. We also had to build much of the development process ourselves. We did not have the original tools Disney used to create quests and locations. We were learning how to expand the game while we were actively building the expansion. That expansion became Hollowed Woods. Hidden beyond King’s Run was an abandoned village overtaken by darkness, filled with strange creatures, unanswered mysteries, and the forces of Jolly Roger. It was unlike anything players had ever seen in Pirates Online, and we had no idea how the community would respond. When the gates opened, pirates flooded into the Woods. They explored every corner, completed its quests, battled its enemies, hunted for its weapons, and embraced this strange new part of the Caribbean as if it had always belonged there. Hollowed Woods became one of the most beloved updates in TLOPO and one of the most anticipated events of every year. Over time, it continued to grow with new stories, locations, characters, legendary weapons, and the enormous Crystal Caverns beneath the village. But its greatest legacy is what it proved to us. Hollowed Woods showed that preserving Pirates Online did not mean freezing it in time. We could protect the world players remembered while continuing to create new adventures that felt worthy of it. It was the moment TLOPO became became the continuation of Pirates Online. Thank you to every developer, artist, writer, tester, and pirate who helped turn our first original expansion into a tradition that players still look forward to nearly a decade later. Hollowed Woods changed what we believed was possible, and everything that followed began there. #pirates #nostalgia #pcgaming #gaming #piratelife

A generation of Pirates of the Caribbean Online players spent years imagining what it would be like to battle the Kraken. Now in 2026, the greatest adventure Pirates Online never got to tell comes now with ravenous hunger... When the original Pirates Online shut down on September 19, 2013, it seemed that dream went down with the ship to the locker. But we never stopped dreaming about what Pirates Online could become. We rebuilt Pirates Online's server infrastructure by hand, restored its world, and spent years learning how to create experiences far beyond the original game. Keeping it alive was only the beginning. We wanted to continue its story. For years, the Kraken remained our ultimate goal. Could a team that began as teenagers rebuilding a lost game create something even the original never had the chance to achieve? The answer was YES! After years of development, experimentation, setbacks, animation, programming, writing, and sound design, the beast finally awakened. The Kraken was no longer an idea. It was real! Players could sail into battle, hear its roar across the sea, and watch its tentacles rise from the depths. It felt like uncovering a missing chapter of Pirates Online history. TLOPO gave us the opportunity not only to preserve the world we loved, but to fulfill the promises left unfinished. The Kraken proved that bringing Pirates Online back did not mean freezing it in time. We could keep moving forward. We could create the adventures we dreamed about. The Kraken was one of the greatest unfulfilled promises of the original game. Together, we brought that promise to life. And we are only getting started. #gaming #piratelife #nostalgia #2000s #2000snostalgia

Millions of former players still believe Pirates of the Caribbean Online (2007) closed forever in 2013. Yet, this nostalgic game has been back for years and years. The hardest part hasn't been rebuilding the game. It's been letting people that we did. You can do everything from the original game, no stone was left unturned! Create your pirate, captain your ship, command your crew, battle fierce enemies, and so much more. And the game did not stop where the original left off. TLOPO has grown through years of new quests, enemies, weapons, stories, locations, and adventures that never existed before the shutdown. The development team has even released content the original game never finished, such as the Kraken Boss Battle and the Headstone Quest! Hundreds of thousands of pirates have already returned. But many former players still have no idea any of this happened. Some searched for the game years ago, found nothing, and assumed it was gone. Others still remember the friends they made, the ships they sailed, and the nights they spent in the Caribbean, but have never heard of TLOPO. One of them may be someone you used to play with. So many former players have spent years believing that world was gone. Help us bring them home. #pirates #piratesofthecaribbean #piratelife #gaming #nostalgia

Destined to become lost media, this beloved, now-defunct online game was saved exactly 12 years ago today, when a few teenagers did the impossible and cracked the code. It sounds almost right out of a movie.
