.@oliviasolon took a ride in Wayve’s robotaxi via the Uber app in London this week, and saw how it cut into a line of bumper-to-bumper traffic, handled tight lane changes, a protest in Parliament Square and pedestrians stepping out erratically into the road. The safety driver took over twice.
For now, Wayve is operating under a regular taxi license, which requires a safety driver aboard its Ford Mustang cars. The Nissan LEAFs that it plans to use for fully driverless ops is still under development and would need to undergo separate safety audits and permitting process.
No other companies (including Waymo or Baidu) have completed the autonomous permitting process in the UK yet.
