Yesterday BJP attacked the book stall of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in Dumdum Nagerbazar.
Today we opened that book stall again.
In the fight of books against bulldozer goonism, books will win.

When the bulldozers sent by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation to demolish book stalls set up by the CPI(M) were turned back by people’s resistance, the BJP took a leaf out of the Nazi playbook and sent in armed police personnel, along with BJP-RSS goons, to smash the book stalls. The priorities of the BJP government are evident when it deploys a huge police force to destroy books, while 19 people, including a child, lost their lives in Chorbagan due to the lack of adequate police arrangements to control crowds and ensure public safety.

Today, on the birthday of PARI co-founder Sonya Gill, the People's Archive of Rural India is launching a Senior Fellowship of Rs. 5 lakh for women journalists and filmmakers, in honour of her work.
Sonya worked for four decades for Women’s Rights with the All India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA). She remained very active even as she battled multiple rounds of cancer.
Her work was rooted in the lives and struggles of everyday people, particularly working-class women.
Her passing on August 25 robbed the women's movement of a fine leader - and me of my beloved life partner of 40 years.
This is a Senior Fellowship for women reporters/film makers. They are expected to produce 10 field reports / one or more documentary films across rural India, over a period of 1-2 years. The Fellowship will cover Women’s Rights, including Women’s Labour, Livelihoods, Health, Justice – and more.
Will update you with further information soon as we can.

Last week, I signed my name to a letter aimed at expressing solidarity with political prisoners in Iran. The plight of political prisoners across the region has always been a concern for me and is reflected in my earliest writings. I always oppose imperial wars and sanctions, as I have in the cases of Iraq, Iran, and elsewhere. I do not believe this opposition requires I stay silent about other injustices, especially carceral ones. This solidarity was the spirit of the letter and my signing it. Still, I recognize the asymmetries of power that the letter’s critics have pointed out, especially relevant in this moment of continued imperial aggression, and thus requested my name be removed.

What blatant arrogance!..
Police are arriving to make arrests wearing neither uniforms nor nameplates, and the Delhi Police have barged into a political party office without permission. This hasty action against one of the faces of the students agitation, former JNU Students' Union President and SFI leader @aishe_ghosh is purely retaliation for her leading the historic protest that forced the Central Government to yield. The Central Government is issuing outright threats, declaring that all participants of the Jantar Mantar demonstration will be sent to prison

Egypt national team head coach Hossam Hassan: “We are living through a time where, in Europe, around the world, and in America, if an animal is mistreated or harmed, human rights organizations, animal rights groups, and everyone else speak out. But every single day, thousands of human beings are being killed, including children and women, while we sit comfortably in air-conditioned homes with food in front of us, and entire families are forced to live in tents through winter and summer. How can we not feel for children who cannot find food and are suffering from disease and epidemics?”… “If I cannot feel this as a human being, then there is no point in me living. Any person who does not feel what is happening in Palestine, regardless of whether they are Muslim, Christian, or Jewish, has lost their humanity.”… “It is a disgrace for all of us. A disgrace for the entire world, not only the Arab or African world. It is a disgrace for those in positions of power who allow people just like us to be killed. We are all the same; we all have eyes, faces, heads, and bodies.”… “I am speaking about humanity, regardless of religion. I am not talking about Islam, Christianity, or Judaism. I am speaking from my heart because I am a human being before anything else—before my identity, my religion, or my nationality.”… “Please, through football—the world’s greatest soft power—and through athletes and journalists of every religion and every country, send one message: Let the Palestinian people live. They are not asking for anything except the chance to live. We want respect for every human being’s right to live, and we want fairness in life.”
