New @nytimes piece ranks 30 education interventions on both effectiveness & costs.
For me, the key takeaway is NOT about what academics (including myself) rated as most effective or least costly.
It is about the decision making process districts use. 🧵

2025 PISA analysis:
"[T]he strongest readers of complex digital material were not the students with the greatest exposure to technology, but those who had read books longer than 100 pages. Reading deeply requires students to sustain attention, construct meaning, connect ideas, and critically reflect on information, precisely the capacities they need to navigate a world overflowing with digital content and AI-generated answers."

For years, we’ve tried to improve reading by teaching children what good readers do: find the main idea, make inferences, visualize, predict. But reading comprehension depends on what good readers know.

Learning needs friction. The brain is fundamentally resistant to cognitive friction (bone-lazy) and will always take the path of least resistance unless certain constraints are put in place. This is why discovery learning is so ineffective and why careful instructional design is so crucial. Also a nice illustration here why chatbots should be banned in the classroom. arxiv.org/abs/2603.10025
