Replying to @mindmodeller
They are closing some racecourses, but the races are not disappearing. They are simply being moved to bigger tracks, and the prize money remains unchanged.
In France, there are a huge number of local races — known as PMH races — on which, until now, you could only bet at the racecourse itself. By moving them to bigger tracks, the aim is to attract more runners and make these races available for online betting. This has angered many people in the industry, particularly, though not exclusively, those involved in grassroots racing.
The context is very different: France has around 230 racecourses, despite having a much smaller racehorse population, compared with around 60 in the UK.
The number of owners in France has increased in recent years, as prize money makes owning a share in a horse affordable for middle-class people. And around a third of French racehorses are also owned, at least partly, by their trainers, also thanks for good prize money for lesser horses. The problem is the lack of “real” owners who can afford to have a couple of horses in training outright, rather than just owning shares. And also the lack of players at the top level as breeders and owners - with the money to compete - compared to IE/GB. That's also why so many French NH horses are for sale: that's a racing nation of small breeders and small owners.

❌ Fin de carrière pour Bertrand Lestrade !
Après son succès ce mercredi à Auteuil, @lestradebertra1 a annoncé sa fin de carrière sur son compte Instagram.
Il s'agissait de sa dernière monte !
Very proud day for the family with Roisin riding her first winner as a conditional on Inca at Hereford, hopefully the first of many
Soon to be 19yo Applesandpierres (right) and recently retired French Champion Hurdle 6th 11yo Lucky One competing in a hunter trial in Dorset. Both have remained with us since retiring, nothing matters more to us than the welfare of our horses whether in training or retirement
Oh and that was our 200th winner! There’s been some great moments along the way with the likes of Madara, Anteros,Man Of Plenty,Garo De Juilley, Zurekin,Enfant Roi,Silmi,Lucky One et al We’ve been privileged to have trained horses of this calibre from such a small team
Delighted to win with the beautiful Warner’s Cross @UttoxeterRaces he managed not to start on his first scheduled race for us so this was an improvement! A great ride from @harryreed8 He’s tricky at home so well done to all the guys at Whitcombe, 2 wins from our last 2 runners🥇
We’ve made the decision to retire our star Lucky One. Bought for £18k in 2022, he went into win €200k including France’s most valuable Hcap Hdle and a fine 6th in 2023 French CH. We hoped to take him for a last Auteuil hurrah this weekend but he was telling us he’s done enough
A terrific effort from a small independent. For those that haven’t been Hexham represents everything that is great about NH racing
We are rapidly approaching the first of our 15 fixtures in 2026 on Thursday 12th March.
We are delighted to announce an increase in prize money again for the coming year with all Steeple Chases (with the exception of our two Hunter Chases) run for a minimum of £10,000, Hurdle races a minimum of £9,000, with National Hunt Flat races continuing to be run for £6,500.
The prestigious “Heart of All England” Maiden Hunter Steeple Chase run on Saturday 9th May will again have a total prize fund of £8,000 making it the most valuable Maiden Hunter Chase in the country.
Our commitment to offer competitive prize money is a reflection on how we value the support offered to us by all Owners, Trainers, Jockeys and Stable Staff, we look forward to seeing you throughout the year and wish everyone success and enjoyable days racing at Hexham.
Roisin is broadly fine after her nasty fall at Ludlow today. The quality of attention/care she received from @LudlowRaceClub the @IJF_official pja and @BHAHorseracing plus jockeys coach Rodi Greene is an absolute credit to the industry. Our jockeys could not be in better hands
We were absolutely delighted to see Aamilah ride her first winner today. Whilst based in Gloucestershire Aamilah came up regularly to ride out and her victory is a huge credit to the work of the Gloucester city farm under the dedicated guidance of Imran Atcha
We are truly delighted that our great friend @EcurieSeror has secured his first jumps trainers championship in France. It is a magnificent achievement and could not happen to a nicer guy and family, many more will follow 🤴🏆🇫🇷 beaucoup félicitations
Our soon to be 18yo Applesandpierres. He was my Father’s last ever horse and proceeded to provide our daughter Roisin with her first winner, sadly after he’d gone. In rude health and leading the yearlings up the gallops, absolute gentleman
See previous post, fire still burns deep in this lovely old fella. Great ride by @leech_roisin on her first spin as a conditional #lifeleftintheolddogyet
Probably worth pointing out he’s won over €195k for current stable including winning the most valuable handicap hurdle in France and 6th in their Champion Hurdle having previously been with Macaire, Mullins, Nicholls and Skelton. If we’ve struggled with him……
Message to my son @ELeech121 and no I didn’t…….

One sound man 👌
Very proud of our daughter @leech_roisin who’s just completed the conditional course @BRSNewmarket. The only problem is that we’re going to have to pay her to ride in races now!!
