Merkel left office five years ago to huge acclaim. Why? She ripped off Nato, cultivated gas dependency on Putin, cosied up to China and opened the door to a million migrants in 2015 alone. She, not the populist right, was the true extremist of our age thetimes.com/comment/columni…

Who’s getting on the bags tonight?
If you are unfamiliar with khat, you may be familiar with its active ingredient, cathinone, or synthetic cathinones like methcathinone, better known as M-Cat, or more broadly, “bath salts.” Khat cultivation accounts for 5–6% of the whole Yemeni economy, a third of agricultural output, a quarter of irrigated farmland and a third of groundwater extraction. That may have been okay if not for the fact that they barely export any of it. It is mostly used for domestic consumption.

One reason Yemen is so impoverished is roughly 80% of the male population is addicted to Khat. They're high almost all the time.

Replying to @enigmartyr
A libertarian will fight to the death for a Yemeni’s right to chew khat all day and have five wives, but won’t accept the slightest constraint on individual choice to preserve his own nation for another generation.

Never forget that the boomers who ushered in DEI never gave up their own positions or took a pay cut. They just pulled the ladder up behind them and took credit for it. Some even got bonuses for meeting their diversity targets.
If the time of the old white males is over, perhaps Pete FitzSimons can transfer his million dollar book deals and media publishing contracts to me. But he won’t, because he’s a selfish fucking boomer who just wants to set fire to everything right as he shuffles off the scene.

AI will create Universal Basic Khat
I looked deep into Yemen’s Khat addiction, and the scale of devastation is insane. Data shows Yemeni citizens spend HALF of their total income on Khat. Khat also uses 40% of their total water supply for no nutritional value while lack of water and starvation is extremely prevalent in Yemen. Starvation in Yemen is beyond alarming. Over 18 million people, just over half of the country's population face acute hunger. There is an estimated 50,000+ child deaths annually in Yemen from extreme hunger and secondary infections. About 130-144 children die per day of starvation in Yemen. The estimate for adults is 20-50 per day, so for some reason they allow children to bare the brunt of death by starvation while tending to Khat crop production and chewing addiction. Why would there be no humanitarian aid to stop that? Because of The Jihadist militants that also own The Khat business in Yemen. International aid funding to Yemen dropped due to The Houthis complete operational theft. They also launched a massive crackdown on humanitarian workers, carrying out abductions and detaining United Nations and NGO employees for ransom. The Houthis essentially have a monopoly on the Khat business in Yemen. Because they control the vast majority of Yemen's mountain ranges, where the country's khat is cultivated, the crop falls directly under Houthi territorial administration, the militant group has successfully monopolized the trade. They profit heavily from the national addiction of Khat by enforcing fees at militia checkpoint fees and taxation. Cultivating khat requires an immense amount of water and the Houthis have seized all key water tables across western and northern Yemen, the Houthis effectively function as landlords to the farming networks. Farmers are dependent on the group for access to the fuel required to run irrigation pumps, allowing Houthi leadership to control the entire industry. Yemen used to be the number one exporter of Coffee in the world and they ripped out almost every single Coffee farm for to produce Khat. Estimates indicate that up to 80% of Yemen's arable land was systematically converted to cultivate Khat. Khat uses four times the amounts of water that coffee does. Yemen is in severe drought conditions and the country is locked in a catastrophic environmental crisis driven by lack of rivers, rainfall and their addiction to Khat. Khat is now so deeply embedded in Yemeni culture, so much so that it transcends the frontlines of the ongoing conflict. The trade is so vital that opposing military forces in Yemen often observe an unwritten daily ceasefire between noon to 4:00 PM allowing both sides to break combat, safely distribute the shipments, and gather to chew the leaf. So to wrap this up, Jihadist Terrorists, that Hasan Piker says are awesome (The Houthis) were stealing all the international aid and holding it hostage to finance terror operations while continuing to be the main drivers behind Yemens Khat industry and addiction. All while hundreds of thousands of Yemenis continue to die of starvation. I would like to say there is a change coming, but almost the entire population seem too focused on chewing Khat to do anything about it.

This reminds me of Marines operating in Helmand’s poppy-growing districts. They routinely used HIIDE biometric kits to collect fingerprints, facial photographs and iris scans from local Afghans, including migrant workers and farmers around the poppy harvest. Sometimes they struggled to get usable biometrics because the farmers’ hands were caked in opium paste, while their pupils were pinned and their eyes twitching from how loaded they were.

Obama is perfectly displaying the concept of hallucination with LLMs here. He sounds so darn good and confident, while having absolutely no clue wtf he sayin.
🚨 OBAMA ON AI: "If we are thinking about AI just in terms of how do we cure cancer or get better energy, you can do that without having agentic AI and having it just roaming free in the internet. The reason you are doing that is because you have to market a product that people will pay money for. That’s a misalignment between what our society needs and the commercial imperatives that these companies are facing, not because necessarily they’re trying to do bad things, but because they’ve got to justify these valuations. So, that’s one more reason why it is really important for us to have a competent government and a serious bipartisan conversation around this issue, and we have to do it fast. And I would encourage voters to pay attention to this. If somebody does not have a serious plan for how to deal with this, then they’re not meeting the moment, and you should probably look for somebody else."

This “Rational Person” observed that humans have an instinct for altruism. They decided this was Rational. So they tried to intellectualize this instinct. Surely a simple formula must explain it? They settled on the formula max(pleasure-pain). But oops! Their formula doesn’t actually match human altruism. Humans care more about friends and family than insects. “Hm weird. Is my formula wrong? No! Humans are Irrational. They must change their instincts. That way my description of their instincts will be correct. That way they will be Rational. Like me. I am so Rational.”

America never stopped needing manufacturing, elites just offshored it out of greed and idiocy.
common view in tech, i hear it all the time, is that we managed the transition to an info economy well, we found new jobs to replace manufacturing jobs, and we'll do the same with the AI revolution they have no idea, or they don't care, that most of the country never recovered
