Government has now intervened hopefully a solution will be found soon
Econet is not taking seriously the issue of people who are losing their WhatsApp numbers. Yesterday, before lunch, after my meeting and not having used my phone for an hour, I opened my WhatsApp and discovered that it had been hacked. I never gave my OTP, never clicked any link, and never responded to any message. I had secured my WhatsApp account by selecting the login and security settings on my WhatsApp profile, and enabled WhatsApp Passkeys, as well as activating two-step authentication (or verification). Very soon people will organize themselves and sue them. Potraz, as the regulator, must also step in and protect the public. The hacking is only happening to Econet numbers why? @begottensun @Potraz_zw @TateMavetera @econet_support

Many Zimbabweans I know now use foreign numbers for their WhatsApp accounts, because they no longer trust our local mobile networks to keep their accounts safe.
Zimbabwe's mobile networks have failed in one of their most basic duties, protecting their customers. A network that cannot keep a subscriber's number secure has failed at the very thing it exists to do.
It is as embarrassing as it is disgraceful that people must turn to foreign networks for security they should have at home.
NEWS | Who is hijacking Zimbabwe’s WhatsApp accounts? Nightmare as serving MP and entrepreneurs lose access
HARARE – A serving Zimbabwean MP has lost control of his WhatsApp account as entrepreneurs and other users report being locked out of their accounts, raising fresh questions about the security of a platform increasingly used to run businesses, handle customer communications and share sensitive information.
“Just lost my Econet WhatsApp in the morning,” Charlton Hwende wrote on X, disclosing that his account was linked to the mobile network. He said an Econet employee who assisted him told him she had also lost her number the previous month.
The reports have put WhatsApp Business users under particular scrutiny, with some saying they were locked out despite having two-factor authentication enabled. Entrepreneur Kudakwashe Musasiwa said he had not clicked suspicious links or shared verification codes yet still lost access to his account.
Musasiwa said the problem stopped after he moved his WhatsApp operations away from Econet-linked numbers. His account has intensified questions about the possible relationship between mobile network services and WhatsApp security, although it does not establish that Econet was responsible for the breach.
Other users have described receiving repeated verification codes, ignoring requests to authorise new devices, and subsequently losing access to their accounts. One WhatsApp business user said attempts to recover the account through WhatsApp support had not restored access.
But how are the accounts being compromised? Engineer and musician Hillzy suggested that unauthorised call forwarding could be diverting WhatsApp verification calls to attackers. ICT commentator KloudCoder raised concerns about the security of one-time passwords and called on the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) to address the reports. Neither explanation has been independently established.
The potential consequences are significant. A hijacked account can allow criminals to impersonate its owner, approach customers under a trusted identity, and solicit money from unsuspecting contacts. For businesses that depend on WhatsApp to manage transactions and customer relationships, losing control of an account can also disrupt operations and expose sensitive information.
The risks have also reached workplace communications. ZiFM Stereo News experienced an apparent account takeover involving an internal WhatsApp group, where an unfamiliar profile using a United States number and a colleague’s identity details gained access before being removed.
The incidents raise pressing questions for Econet, other mobile network operators, WhatsApp, POTRAZ, and law enforcement. Are the reported takeovers connected? Could weaknesses in account verification or telecommunications services be exploited? What investigations are under way, and what protection is available to customers whose accounts have been compromised?
With a serving legislator among those affected, the reports demand a clear technical explanation. Establishing how the accounts were taken over, whether the incidents share a common cause, and whether any security failures occurred will be critical to protecting users from further account losses, impersonation, and financial fraud.

WHATSAPP ACCOUNTS ARE BEING HACKED. WHAT'S GOING ON?
What's taking place, and who is behind these attacks? Why are they targeting WhatsApp accounts, and what are they using the accounts for?
If someone gains access to your WhatsApp account, can you recover it, or is it gone for good? If it is recoverable, what steps should you take to get it back?
Don't come here and tell us about 2FA. Of course, two-factor authentication is something that takes less than two minutes to set up, and many of us have already done that. We have 2FA enabled, yet people are still reporting that their accounts have been compromised.
Don't assume that everyone affected clicked suspicious or unscrupulous links or kuti tiri kungopa vanhu maPassword edu tega.
The subject of the matter is account hacking not phishing. I want us to look beyond the usual explanations and understand what's actually happening. How are these accounts being compromised, who is behind the attacks, and what do they stand to gain?
Most importantly, once your WhatsApp account has been compromised, how do you recover it? What are the practical steps one needs to take?
Ngatibatsiranei. If you have experienced this, helped someone recover an account, or have reliable information about how these attacks are happening, please share your experience and knowledge.

Just got this in my DM:
I've gathered the rate at which people are getting hacked ...this has to be a whatsapp business hacking bot that was created:
Criteria to be hacked:
- Have an econet line registered on whatsapp business
- Have your device be offline/the app closed for 5 mins or more
Hacking Process:
-Temporary Call/SMS Forwarding on econet line to intercept and get onetime OTP
- If Enabled, it then bypasses all other 2FA processes, (still don't know how its doing this)
- Logs into your whatsapp – (as long as u are still offline or the app is still closed)
- Changes 2FA email address, creates broadcast lists to send phishing links or messages asking for money
- If you are being targeted remove information like linked bank cards (if you run ads from whatsapp) and remove linked accounts like Instagram or facebook.
How to protect yourself:
- Stay online and connected as much as possible, (until the wave of hacking has died down)
- Dial *#61# to check if calls or sms's are being forwarded
- Dial ##002# to clear any call forwarding. (try do this every hour especially if u offline/app closed)
- to detect temporary calls forwarding, Check your network bars on your phone - they will show no connection or be blank for quite some time – you will also not be able to place any calls or send texts for a short period
