Since it’s been a while, here’s an update: I’ve been loving Peds Endo. Being a fellow after being an attending, a bit less, but I don’t regret it at all. I adopted a rescue dog last year and she’s been tolerating me fine. And I’m still out and living my best life.

I was 14. I was living on Long Island in Setauket, NY. My memory of that day is disjointed.

I remember the pain and suffering of classmates who lost their parents in the attack. I remember feeling helpless. I remember wanting to do something, anything to help.

That year I searched the Army Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP). And 13 years later I was an Army HPSP recipient. And 25 years later, here I am, a doctor, an Army veteran, and stuck in the memory of that day which changed the lives of so many, including myself.

Sept 11th, 2001 was a big reason I decided to join the military as a doctor. I wanted to do more for my country, be a part of something bigger. 25 yrs later I have completed 11 yrs of service, won awards for teaching, and been banned twice for being trans in the military.

Trump’s America is not the one I chose to serve, but I will keep fighting and standing up for the America I did.

A 76-year-old trans woman got NHS gender-affirming surgery in 1967. Today's young trans people can't access puberty blockers on a private prescription at all. Same country. Sixty years apart. Direction of travel: backwards. My full take: helenwebberley.com/news/tran…

Did you know there are only 1500-1600 board certified Pediatric Endocrinologists in the U.S.? Roughly 350,000 youth under age 20 live with type 1 diabetes. And that’s only type 1. That doesn’t even count the myriad of other conditions which fall under Peds Endo. Why so few?

This means a lot of people who may be interested in Pediatric Endocrinology cannot afford to become one. Wait times only increase for kids to see a Pediatric Endocrinologist. In Kentucky where I am a fellow there are only two major practices in the entire state.

Families travel 2-3 hrs one way to visit our office. This problem will only continue to get worse as we continue to not give priority to the care of children and continue to dismiss non-procedural medical specialists. My two cents, Dr. L

Despite the vitriol, I continue to hold my head up high. Being trans is truly not the most exciting thing about me, but it is the one that some folks tend to fixate on. I am a better person because of who I am. No regrets. So I stay open and proudly trans 🏳️‍⚧️
