In the land of Bittensor, things move at the speed of light. The rules change daily, weekly, monthly. And now, there’s a different way to validate and mine on a subnet. The new consensus mechanism that’s been introduced is called Null Consensus. It serves as an optional alternative to the chain’s original Yuma consensus mechanism, in that it allows 10 times the miners, lowers the barrier of entry to mine, and makes scoring simpler by concentrating it in one place. Null cannot be applied to the root subnet. 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀 Null Consensus increases the miner capacity to 2500 UIDs (with one emission mechanism). Instead of achieving consensus of multiple validators with Yuma, Null consensus assigns the highest staking validator as the single determinant of weights and how miner rewards are distributed. • This validator receives the permit to submit, commit, or reveal weights. • In the event validators have the same amount of stake, the lowest UID is awarded the sole validator permit. • Other UIDs with positive stake receive dividends based on the percentage staked on the subnet, including inactive ones. 𝗪𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 • The original Yuma consensus assigned miner rewards based on the weighted averages of multiple validators, with clipping for outliers. • In Null consensus, one validator assigns raw u16 integers as exact relative ratios to give precise individual weights to each miner, without max-scaling or averaging. • Validators were given their share of emissions based on the bonds, or in other words, how similar their weights were to consensus. • Null Consensus simply divvies out rewards based on proportion of the validator’s stake. • If the top validator submits no valid non-zero weights, the miner budget is split equally across every registered UID. 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀 There are mixed opinions on this new consensus mechanism, and rightly so. Let’s break down the pros and cons of Null Consensus. 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘀: • This new consensus allows Bittensor to greatly scale miner operations to produce even more productive work and innovation. • Owners can also optionally enable fee-free proof-of-work registration so miners are not restricted by paying a certain amount of TAO to register or to pay as a fee to enter a competition. • Skipping consensus and bond calculations allows for much more efficiency in the validator and miner dynamic. 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀: • Having just one validator set all the weights and the distribution of rewards creates a sense of centralization. • The key tenet in validation was to get a majority or consensus amongst participants in order to ensure proper checking of work and reward distribution. A single validator with the highest amount of stake takes away from that consensus and makes it a single player game. • The lack of barrier of entry could result in miners spamming the subnet. Potential for collusion to stack a validator with the most • TAO and distribute rewards to certain participants is a possibility. 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 In summation Null Consensus is a 180 degree approach to mining and validating a subnet in Bittensor. For projects that require a large number of miners, need simpler validation, and easy barrier to entry, Null consensus could be a good option. Yuma remains the default consensus for all subnets, as well as the more decentralized option. The speed and efficiency of Null has the potential to take Bittensor to new heights. But will the benefits outweigh the trade-offs? Come share your thought in the Subnet Summer Telegram: t.me/subnetsummertg

Today’s piece looks at the part of Bittensor that still breaks the incentive loop. Weight copying lets validators skip the hardware, the repo work, and the actual scoring, then set a 0% take and ride the median. Once enough stake sits on those copies, recycled weights start to outweigh the validators who measured the work. Miners get paid on the echo instead of the evaluation. The network only improves what gets checked. Until a weight submission has to prove the scoring happened, the cheaper path keeps winning. That’s the gap we walked through.

I had my Grok @bot read 500 Bittensor posts on X in the last week to gauge sentiment and here's what I found: 1. 76% bullish, weighted by engagement, however it turned a little bearish towards the end of the week 2. Bullish sentiment was led by: • Subnet revenue reportedly +40% in a month, now $50M+/yr(xitter.cf/markjeffrey/status/210…) • Subnets buying back + burning their own tokens led by Lium who alone bought back $2.7M of alpha and burned it in under 6 months(xitter.cf/opentensor/status/2108…) • Grayscale's TAO fund added Coinbase as a custodian(xitter.cf/Dikaios22/status/21073…) • $1T-by-2030 narrative by Stillcore Capital(xitter.cf/rob_svrn/status/210682…) 3. Why some are bearish: • $TAO rejected near $310 for the third time(xitter.cf/AltCryptoGems/status/2…) • The real question: how does $1 of subnet revenue create demand for $TAO itself?(xitter.cf/Donaxbt/status/2106036…) • Backlash over new Gamma tokens(xitter.cf/CryptoYuzu/status/2106…) Overall subnet revenues, buyback + burns, institutional adoption, and bullish future projections of $TAO is keeping sentiment up. How you feeling about Bittensor?
You can thank Const and his god complex for investors bailing after Exploit and the introduction of Gamma. Why would anyone put significant sums in this? What you invested in yesterday isn’t what you’re invested in today. $TAO is a circus

Democratized validators is the future of Bittensor
Subnet Summer started as a place to talk. Today it becomes a place where stake can speak. The Subnet Summer Validator is live, built with Medulla Labs. Where your root yield goes is your call. You vote, it moves. The Town Square of Bittensor now has a vote. 🔗 : subnetsummer.com/
