Cell phone addiction is an absolute thermonuke to the brain and nobody 'takes it seriously' because it is not clear that there is any solution in a world where the revealed preference of everyone across the globe, regardless of income, race, age, any factor whatsoever, would rather be on their phone than do *anything* else. Deciding "I use this too much" and meaningfully altering one's behaviour doesn't seem to have much success for any of the very small minority of people with the sentience or self-reflection to realize how bad it is. Most people seem to think of it as an unproductive habit at most, rather than an addiction. Any attempt to speak seriously about this is met with derision, accusations of pretentiousness. There is no real solution to it. The future of human cognition fifty years down the line is horrifying if you stop and think about it for even a moment.

Tell an American that their tax dollars line the pockets of politicians who fuck children and they just shrug, but tell them that their tax money could help someone in poverty and they get absolutely furious. Doubly so if it's a black person.

I like the part of Come Together when they say “He’s got feet down below his knees” cause I’m like phew that’s exactly where knees should be I was worried it was gonna be something freaky again like the juju eyeballs

When the Peanut the Squirrel memes went around immediately before the 2024 election, that’s when I knew that the American population deserved the damnation and punishment that they were about to get.

I do wish people understood that the prose is everything. There is no story “beneath” the prose. Cartesian dualism does not exist for books. There is no distinct soul of a book that can be separated from the body its prose. The experience of reading the language IS the novel.
I just saw this in the kindle store and now you all have to suffer along with me

Imagine you’re watching John Wilson and you hear him softly say “or a really fat stupid guy” and it’s a video of you eating two hot dogs on a bench

The problem with Digger is that too many writers are too eager to pigeonhole it as a “climate change satire” when the film is really about the futility of satire when the powerful have already ruined the world.

in 1987, west german ice hockey team ecd iserlohn was going through financial problems ($3.5 million in debt). desperate for sponsorships, they struck a $900,000 deal with libyan dictator colonel gaddafi to advertise his ideological manifesto “the green book” on their jerseys.

sorry i just can't get over this, if you saw this happening in the opening to a movie it would be the most overwrought heavy-handed symbolism imaginable but it's just actually happening in real life. it's astonishing. god really is an artist
