When you’re inside the frame, it’s almost impossible to see the whole picture. Internal audit teams work tirelessly within established processes, but proximity naturally creates blind spots; in methodology, capability balance, and resource allocation. That is where an objective, external perspective changes the game. By stepping back to evaluate your internal audit function with fresh, authoritative eyes, our Quality Assurance Services (QAS) help you pinpoint exact areas for performance improvement. The outcome isn't just a compliance stamp; it's tangible efficiency gains and a measurably higher-impact function that drives organisational success. Curious about what a fresh perspective could uncover for your IAF? Much of the commentary is written with larger internal audit functions in mind: sizeable teams, dedicated methodology support, a formal quality assurance function, and budget for specialists. That is not the reality for many internal audit functions in South Africa. Some have a CAE and two internal auditors. Others operate through shared services arrangements or co-sourced models stretched across several entities. For these functions, the honest question is not simply, “How do we conform?” It is, “How do we conform with the capacity and specialist skills we realistically have available?” A few practical steps can make a meaningful difference: • Build coverage across several engagements over time. One exhaustive audit is not required. • Make scoping decisions based on risk and document the rationale clearly. • Where specialist skill is genuinely not available, say so transparently to the audit committee. The Standards contemplate obtaining the necessary competence; acknowledging the gap is responsible governance, not failure. • Invest once in templates and methodology. For a small IA function, that may be the highest return available, because it carries forward into every subsequent engagement. The requirement establishes a baseline; it does not assume unlimited resources. To small internal audit functions and one-person shops: what is the single biggest constraint you are facing? October marks Cyber Awareness Month, but for internal audit professionals, cyber resilience is never just a 30-day conversation. Today, boards and audit committees demand clear, objective assurance that digital assets, cloud environments, and sensitive data are protected against emerging threats. Bridging that assurance gap requires practical, up-to-date technical skills. In Part 1 of our Cyber Awareness series, the Leadership Academy highlights three instructor-led, core cybersecurity CPD programmes scheduled before year-end to empower your internal audit function: Cybersecurity Governance, Risk and Audit Controls for Internal Auditors (CSIA) Equip yourself to evaluate core cyber domains, assess operational controls, and calculate a reliable cyber safety score to report directly to executive management and the board. Dates: 17 – 19 November 2026 Online: governanceacademy.co.za/even… Classroom: governanceacademy.co.za/even… Auditing Cyber Security & Information Security using NIST & ISO 27002 (ACSIS) Master framework-driven auditing across technical perimeters, cloud environments, and mobile controls, aligned with South African legislation, including POPIA and the Cybercrimes Act. The IIA’s Third-Party Topical Requirement has now been in effect for over a month, having gone live on 15 September 2026. It marks the second mandatory Topical Requirement in the IPPF, following Cybersecurity in February, with Organisational Behaviour scheduled to take effect on 15 December 2026. So, what does this reality look like in practice? For internal audit functions that prepared in advance, the transition has been seamless. For those that did not, the shift is significant — every third-party assurance engagement currently underway or scheduled in the approved plan must now be assessed against a defined baseline, along with every related engagement file that follows. A recurring reflection as these requirements roll out: the profession is visibly moving away from accepting “it depends” as a sufficient answer to how high-risk areas are audited. Consistency is increasingly being formalised. Some internal audit professionals may view this as a constraint on professional judgement. Rather, it represents the floor being raised: judgement still determines what applies, but the rationale must be clear, defensible, and documented. Where does your internal audit function stand? It remains an active and essential discussion across the profession, with valid perspectives on both sides. Email: dirk@governanceacademy.co.za.
