Some thoughts are worth seeing all the way through. Every Monday, I share reflections on leadership, work, identity, growth, and the conversations that stay with us long after they’re over. I’d love to have you join this community ⬇️ 🔗 lead2support.substack.com/su…

I think one of the more underrated life skills is being able to have a perfectly good day even when a whole lot of things are conspiring against it. Stay steady today!

No new equipment. No complicated instructions. No first day on the job. We all eat every day, but somehow we still have an issue every once in a while. A good reminder to have a little humility for anyone who thinks experience means they’ve got it all figured out.

Ohwee! At some point you have to stop acting surprised. We spend a lot of time being frustrated by behavior that is entirely predictable. Allowed. Ignored. Or Unchanged. Sometimes the problem isn't the circus. It's that we keep buying tickets.

Some people make you better. Some make you laugh. Some teach you things you probably would have preferred to learn another way. And sometimes you don’t even realize how much someone changed you until long after they’re gone. Not everyone is meant to stay. But almost everyone leaves you with something. What will you leave someone with today?

We’ve all talked ourselves out of something because the timing wasn’t right, we weren’t ready, or we wanted to feel a little more confident first. Later, we look back and realize we probably weren’t ever going to feel completely ready anyway. Sometimes the biggest risk isn’t jumping too soon. It’s spending so much time getting ready that you never jump at all. Maybe take a small jump today.

It's amazing how quickly we can decide what someone else should have done when we have absolutely no idea what they were dealing with. We see the decision, but not the circumstances, the conversations, or the options they had to choose from. Be generous with your judgements today.

It’s funny how once you realize you’re capable of something you never thought you could do, you start questioning all the other things you’ve convinced yourself you can’t achieve. Sometimes the biggest surprise isn’t what you’re capable of, it’s how long you underestimated yourself. Turns out, you might have been the one holding you back.

Somewhere along the way, we started believing that every minute of our lives needed to be productive. That even our downtime should have a purpose, a benefit, or something to show for it. So we feel guilty about sleeping in, scrolling on our phones, or spending an entire afternoon doing absolutely nothing. Some things we do just because we like them. Do more of those things too 🤍

Sometimes the hardest part isn’t figuring out what you want. It’s continuing to want it when getting there becomes less fun than you imagined. The things we care about can still frustrate us. The work we love can exhaust us. The life we chose can occasionally make us wonder what exactly we were thinking. A hard season doesn’t always mean you chose the wrong thing. Don’t confuse being tired of the road with being done with the destination.🤍

Sometimes leaders avoid addressing poor behavior because they don’t want to create friction. We give another reminder, make another exception, smooth things over, or quietly work around the person because confronting it feels harder than absorbing it. But people are pretty good at figuring out what works for them. If being disrespectful gets the result they want, if ignoring expectations has no consequence, or if pushing hard enough makes the boundary move, there’s very little reason to do anything differently. Avoiding the friction doesn’t make the behavior go away. It just teaches people that the behavior works. If you want the behavior to stop, you have to stop letting it work.

There’s a lot of conversation right now about whether we’re using AI too much. I’ve been wondering if the better question is: What parts of the work should we actually be giving it? This week’s Seeing It Through ⬇️ Give AI the 80%. lead2support.substack.com/p/…

We tend to think our impact comes from the big things…the advice we give, the decisions we make, the moments when we know someone is watching. But people notice the smaller things too. Whether we make space. Whether we assume the best. Whether kindness is still our default when there’s nothing in it for us. Someone is always learning what’s possible by watching you.

The conversation. The apology. The thank you. The compliment. The decision you keep saying you’re going to make. We spend a lot of time doing things halfway because halfway feels easier. But halfway has a cost too. Whatever you’re going to do, do it like you mean it today 🤎

There’s something about the first day of a new month that makes a fresh start feel slightly more believable. Maybe October doesn’t need a big plan or a dramatic reinvention. Maybe it can just be a little quieter, a little slower, and a little easier. Carry on.

It’s funny how two people can live through the exact same moment and have completely different versions of what happened. We all bring so much with us into a room…the day we’ve had, the things we’re worried about, what happened last time, what we were expecting to happen this time. Sometimes what feels incredibly obvious to us isn’t obvious at all. It’s just the view from where we’re standing.

There is a difference between humility and shrinking yourself. You can know you’re good at something without believing you’re better than everyone else. You can name what you contribute, take up the space you’ve earned, and still stay curious about what other people bring to the table. Humility isn’t pretending you have less to offer. It’s knowing what you bring, and knowing you’re not the only one who brings something valuable. Be all of you today. 🤍

There’s something almost comical about how many times life asks us to begin again. A new week. A hard conversation. A plan that didn’t work. A version of ourselves we were pretty sure we had already figured out. And yet, here we are. Up again. Maybe not enthusiastically, but still up!

Sometimes the hardest thing is to stop filling in the blanks for people. We explain away the missed effort. We rationalize the lack of follow-through. We tell ourselves what they probably meant, why they’re busy, or what they might do differently next time. But there’s something freeing about giving people enough room to show you what they choose when you aren’t managing the choice for them. People’s patterns usually answer questions their words can’t. What do you see?

Care too much. Ask too many questions. Laugh too loudly. Be too enthusiastic. Have too many ideas. Send the text. Give the compliment. Get excited about the thing. I’m increasingly convinced that “too much” is often just the right amount for the right people and the right places. Take up the space today 🤍
