7/27/2014: I stood on the start line of #LaCoursebyTourdeFrance. ❤️ We—our activism group @LeTourEntier—fought so hard for this race, to bring women back to Le Tour, to secure the “Tour de France” naming rights which were taken away from the women’s Tour de France Feminin in 1989. On July 27, 2014 the start line was the victory that brought women back. The GOAT @marianne_vos won that day, a perfect exclamation point as she was part of our advocacy group, as was @PooleyEmma and @chrissiesmiles. The one-day race #LaCoursebyTdF ran for 8 years before becoming @LeTourFemmes, now 9 stages. Those of you who’ve read/listened to STAND know the full story (and if you haven’t, link in bio). The fight for women’s re-inclusion at Le Tour was brutal behind the scenes. Nearly killed me. I’m okay now, but I wasn’t then. Sometimes changing a small part of the world will bring your own crashing down. Today I know the struggle was worth the journey. ❤️ There is still inequity at TdFF—shorter stages, fewer days, 29% prize money—all based on ASO’s assumption women can’t do as many days, ride as far, or deserve pay equity. But today—July 27—is always a day worth celebrating how far we’ve come, in addition to how far we can go. To all the women racing TdFF next week, you are amazing, beautiful beacons of better days in this sport! Best of luck! 11 years ago our petition, website & mission for women at the Tour de France went viral. @CNN was my first interview and our @LeTourEntier campaign snowballed internationally from there. (STAND has the full story 📚). 8 years of @LaCoursebyTDF morphed to 8-day @LeTourFemmes and this summer will be the 10th anniversary of officially having women back at Le Tour since the badass women rode in the 1980s. You guys. The woman on the right is Laura Ruptash, who rode the 1985 Tour de France Feminin for Team Canada. The woman on the left is her daughter, Emma, who is our resident at @HomestretchFdn. The woman in the middle could not possibly be any happier.
