From today the Mayor can call in licensing decisions across London. The City of London Corporation thinks over half of its applications may fall in scope. Square Mile bars and restaurants need quick, local decisions, not another layer at City Hall. mylondon.news/news/zone-1-ne…

Blue lights on, and the ambulance was still told to find another way round. Emergency access on Oxford Street cannot be an afterthought. Sadiq Khan needs to fix this now.

Rachel Reeves must live on a different planet! 🪐 But she sums up Labour’s attitude – tax the ‘bad’ guys. Whether that’s employers, landlords, private schools or someone else they’ve decided isn’t taxed enough. Because so few of them have ever worked in the private sector, they simply don’t understand the consequences. Fewer jobs. Higher rents. Schools closing down. Rachel Reeves’ Jobs Tax has crushed our employment market. Vacancies have dropped to their lowest level in 12 years outside the pandemic. There are 176,000 fewer jobs available than when Rachel Reeves entered the Treasury. That is what happens when you attack employers, tax jobs and increase red tape. Instead of getting a grip and scrapping some of Rachel Reeves’ terrible decisions in his Budget, John Healey has doubled down. He is making exactly the same mistakes she did, taking the tax burden to a record high. We Conservatives won’t be making the same mistakes. I’ll be a tax-cutting Chancellor, because you can NEVER tax and spend your way to prosperity.

City Thameslink shuts from May to late December 2027 while all 10 escalators are replaced. It's a key commuter station for the Square Mile, with about 7.6m passengers a year. Network Rail advises using Blackfriars instead. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cq39…

Sadiq Khan hails "the largest devolution of powers to London in a generation": a share of our income tax, business rates and tourist tax, worth around £10bn in borrowing. Yet Labour has almost halved Westminster's core funding. Where's our fair share? cityam.com/london-to-get-bak…

Labour's Fair Funding formula in action: Barnet wants a 32% council tax rise, Bromley and Lambeth want to break the 5% cap too, and Westminster's core funding has been almost halved. Londoners are asked to pay more at every level. standard.co.uk/news/politics…

The Mayor didn't even tell the council before announcing his Oxford Street plan. Decisions about Westminster's streets should be made with the people who live and work here, not handed down from City Hall.
When Sadiq Khan announced his Oxford Street plan, Labour ran Westminster and he didn't even tell them. Not a Mayor concerned with local democracy. Tim Barnes (@votetimbarnes) on BBC Radio London. #WestminsterMatters #Westminster #CityThatWorksForAll

The Budget lets City Hall keep the 2p business rates supplement on larger premises beyond 2029, when it was meant to end. Square Mile offices have helped pay for the Elizabeth line since 2010. A levy with an end date should end on time. mylondon.news/news/zone-1-ne…

Banks will pay a 6% surcharge for 15 months from January. The City Corporation is right: it must end on schedule, and firms need a clear tax roadmap. The Square Mile helps fund public services across the UK. Keep squeezing it and capital goes elsewhere. news.cityoflondon.gov.uk/cit…

Labour's new "Founders' Relief" sounds generous: a 10% CGT rate on gains up to £10m. Read the small print and it's a different story. To qualify you need: •25% of the company when the trade began •5 years' holding and 5 years' continuous UK residence •£10m turnover and 15 full-time employees •25% compound growth over three years in two of three tests (turnover, headcount or £1.5m of R&D) Most founders are diluted well below 25% long before they get anywhere near this, and most successful small businesses will never meet the tests. Turnover is a poor metric of success. A relief this convoluted won't change anyone's decision to start a business or keep it in the UK. Founders want a simple tax system with low rates, not a maze of conditions.

The City faces a projected £70m shortfall from Fair Funding, which ignores its 680,000 daily commuters. A Common Councillor is already warning of savage cuts by 2029. Workers and visitors still need clean, safe streets. mylondon.news/news/zone-1-ne…

It’s no surprise John Healey’s do-nothing Budget has failed to calm business fears. He has failed to meet the moment. 👇 We desperately need a government that backs business. Cut red tape, cut the cost of hiring and cut taxes. We Conservatives will.
Business groups are sharply criticising John Healey’s budget “This budget lacks the bold moves that would have made it easier for firms to invest, hire and grow,” CBI boss Rain Newton-Smith says “There is nothing concrete to provide breathing space for the vast majority of businesses who are already dealing with energy bills a third higher than their European counterparts.” The budget had “nothing to ease sky-high energy bills and nothing to make hiring someone more affordable,” the Federation of Small Businesses says. The British Chambers of Commerce says Healey’s package lacks “the big calls that would really shift the economic dial” and that “many firms will have been hoping for a greater impact.” Make UK says the budget “failed to address any of the fundamental costs holding back investment and growth in manufacturing.” Via @Joe_Mayes @JacobReid02 @sabahmeddings: bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

Financial devolution announced in the Budget is a half a billion smash & grab raid by central Govt on Westminster. We won't see a penny of that as it will all goes to the Mayor along with overnight tourist tax levy. Meanwhile @CityWestminster gets its funding cut by £100m.
