2 weeks of posting about murmur in public. Thank you to everyone who tried it. Keep feedback coming 🙏🏾

I live in Obsidian. murmur's spoken notes land as plain Markdown in a folder I pick, which is my vault. Hold a chord, say the thought, let go. It's in my notes before I've switched windows.

murmur for iPhone is in testing. The keyboard is a big talk button, plus space, delete, and return. Do you prefer a usable keyboard as well with the dictation button?

murmur is free and stays free. If it saves you time, murmur Pro is a $49 one-time thank-you that funds it, with a few extras like saved provider profiles and early access. Code FOUNDERS makes it $39 and makes you a founding member.

How to get good at dictation in a week: → Talk like you're explaining it to a friend → Pause instead of saying um (murmur drops the ums anyway) → Say "period" or "new line" only when you care → Hold the key a beat before you start talking
10
Dictation tip: don't stop to fix a mistake. Keep talking and say "scratch that." murmur deletes the sentence you were in and keeps going.

Things I dictate every day with murmur: → Slack replies → Emails I've been avoiding → Prompts for agents → Meeting notes, right after the meeting → Notes to self What's on your list?

murmur runs on Windows too. Same hotkey, same cleanup, same free price. Windows shows a "protected your PC" screen the first time, because I haven't paid for code signing yet. Click More info, then Run anyway. murmurapp.app

What does voice typing actually cost to run? Groq charges 4 cents/hr of audio for Whisper large v3 turbo. An hour of talking is around 7,800 words. That's why murmur can be free: the expensive part costs almost nothing.

murmur counts the time you get back by talking instead of typing. At my 40 wpm typing speed, my 13,144 dictated words would have taken about 5.5 hours to type. Small daily wins add up.

From Oct 14 to 24 (our soft launch), 10 people signed up for NewsbookLM, my AI news briefing app. 0 started a trial. I quickly understood why. Here's what I did to fix it 👇

Sign up sent them straight to a credit card form, before they'd seen ANYTHING. Now new users get a handheld walkthrough to their first free report (their brand, a client, even a school subject). Instead of "Give me money," it's "Here, let me help you w/ your solution."

If they find it valuable, then they can consider paying. Something I've learned over the years: more value up front = more conversions on the back end. We'll see how it goes. How do you give new users value first?

Why is murmur open source? Dictation hears everything you say. You should be able to read the code that handles it. Every line is on GitHub under GPLv3. No account, no tracking.

Guess that’s easy enough
Introducing 'stripe pay', for instant business-to-business transfers. Find companies using their Stripe profile handle and send funds for free. Available in the Dashboard and CLI.

Turn on Smart lists in murmur and just talk. "I need to pack socks, shirts, shoes, pants" lands as a bulleted list. "First email the team, then update the deck, then send it" lands numbered. Normal sentences stay sentences.

murmur vs Wispr Flow, fairly: Wispr Flow: polished, phone apps, team controls, a notetaker. Free tier, Pro $15/mo. murmur: free, unlimited, open source, no account, your own key, Mac and Windows. Want it all handled for you? Wispr. Want to own it? murmur.

When I talk, I correct myself mid-sentence. "Let's meet Tuesday. No, Wednesday." murmur's new Apply corrections writes just "Let's meet Wednesday." In testing it fixed all 280 corrections it was given. It's in the latest release, under a switch in Settings.

Ever just want to talk to text to tell it what to do? You can now. Select your text anywhere, hold murmur's transform chord, & say "tighten this" or "turn this into steps" or "reply politely & decline." It rewrites the selection in place. Paste-last brings the original back.
