He only went out for dinner. That was all she asked. When Patrick Clancy came home, he found his wife beneath the window, lying in the snow—broken, bleeding, barely alive. He dropped beside her, called for help, and kept saying her name, as if repeating it could somehow bring her back. Then he went inside for the children. Cora was five. Still young enough to want to be carried, even if she pretended otherwise. Dawson was three. The kind of little boy who could fill an entire house simply by running through it. He held Callan’s hand. He lay beside him. He talked to him about his sister and brother, so Callan would know he came from love. He begged. Just give me one, he must have thought. Give me one child, and I will spend the rest of my life making it enough. But Callan died in his father’s arms. Tonight, Patrick spoke about those four days. He told his son he was sorry. He told him he loved him. He held him. He lay beside him. And then he had to watch the last of his children die. That is not simply grief.
