There is a little knot in my throat for every attempt to launch humans off of Earth's surface. We can take rocket launches for granted here on the Space Coast, and yet precious cargo reminds us that spaceflight is still in its infancy.
Congratulations NASA & SpaceX #Crew13! π

The fight isn't over!
Rocket Lab has filed a formal protest with the Government Accountability Office challenging NASAβs award decision for the Mars Telecommunications Network.
NASAβs award decision appears to be inconsistent with the eligibility criteria mandated by Congress. In addition, the agencyβs punitive review of Rocket Lab's technical volume was inconsistent, making incorrect assertions and conclusions.
Procurement standards exist to ensure fair competition and protect public investment. We are pursuing this review to ensure those standards are upheld for critical infrastructure that will underpin American exploration at Mars for decades to come.

Such a beautiful launch on this hot Florida morning! Go @NASARoman! π
Iβm sad to see this outcome! I got my masterβs degree analyzing gamma-ray burst data from Swift as soon as a GRB was observed.
I have high hopes for the future of satellite servicing. Iβm glad NASA and Katalyst took the chance to try.

π¨βURGENT ADVOCACY ACTION. We can pause a harmful rewrite of science grant rules, but only if enough of us speak up THIS WEEK. π¨
OMB proposed a rewrite of the rules that govern how research grants get administered. That rewrite would give political appointees more power to override which projects get funded, based on alignment with administration priorities rather than scientific merit. It was set to take effect October 1.
The House already passed its own funding bill (a "clean" CR) that does nothing to stop this. But this weekend, the Senate Appropriations Committee, led by Republican Chair Susan Collins and Democratic Vice Chair Patty Murray, released a bipartisan bill that would fund the government through December 11 AND pause that OMB rule until then.
This is the best shot we have before senators leave for August recess. If it doesn't pass this week, we lose momentum and the harmful rule could move forward unchecked.

Is NASA pursuing its own reduced gravity aircraft again because @GoZeroG's plane is no longer operational?
According to this article, the @NASAArmstrong plane will be for lunar gravity testing.
What about general microgravity testing in the US?

There's Mu-g, but its plane is tiny. As someone who has flown these reduced gravity flights, the space to move around even one payload is useful, sometimes crucial, depending on the research objectives.

π One week left to submit your paper for the UCF Space Ideation Challenge! Donβt miss your chance to share innovative ideas and compete for a share of the $125,000 prize pool.
Submit by July 31: bit.ly/3PKWP1V
Presumption of approval - this has been a long time coming.
I'm curious to see how this plays out when it comes to lunar and planetary payloads and the friction with planetary protection guidelines. Tardigrades on the Moon comes to mind (2019). Human ashes are another area.
