🌱 This week, we joined our civil society partners at a workshop on equitable access to land, where they strategised on what they want "equitable", "access", and "land" to encompass. We'll share more of the outcomes soon! ✊🏾

The Regional Land Claims Commission in Limpopo, led by Chief Director, Mr Tele Maphoto and Director responsible for Operations, Mr Miyelani Nkatingi actualised the return of the previously dispossessed land portion to the Tshifhefhe land claimants in Makhado Local Municipality under the Vhembe District.
The actualisation is the preliminary land restoration process by the officials of government which is a mechanism undertaken to prepare the beneficiaries for uninterrupted production of the after the hand over of the land.
During the milestone, Mr Maphoto reminded the representatives of the land claimants that the restored property was not for their personal benefit, but for the betterment of the lives of future generations.
“Farming is a business or generational proceeds. Don’t think you are here for the money and start fighting among yourselves frustrating the operations of this farm,” warned Maphoto.
Mr Maphoto went further cautioning the CPA members of unacceptable behaviour that eventually affects the running of the farm.
“You are getting back the land of macadamia nuts with a functioning borehole and other infrastructure. Make sure you learn how to operate the infrastructure, and how it is mapped,” implored Maphoto.
Representing the land claimants, the Chairperson of the Tshifhefhe Communal Property Association (CPA), Mr Libada promised that their CPA will handle things differently from the others across the countries.
Common challenges affecting the CPAs include irregularities, infighting and property neglect.
The Tshifhefhe family comprises 16 households, including the originally dispossessed, and their descendants. They were forcefully removed from their forefathers’ land during the previous discriminatory regime. The community lodged their land restoration claim before the 1998 cut-off date, which became successful after all the relevant validations.
Government has restored their land rights, returning to them four properties measuring 611.9183 in hectares, to the value of over R7 million.

At Ndifuna Ukwazi (NU), our work on land, housing and spatial justice has always started with people and their experiences of Cape Town. Where people live matters!
But there is another part of this conversation that we need to start paying more attention to: climate change.
For communities living in vulnerable conditions, climate change means flooding, fires, and extreme weather that can damage homes, disrupt livelihoods and displace people. This raises important questions about what security of tenure means when the places poor and working-class people live in are increasingly exposed to climate risks.
Over the past year, NU has been exploring some of these questions through a pilot project in Langa, Cape Town, working with community members to understand what climate resilience could look like when we think about housing and security of tenure.
This is where the KwaLangaLibalele project comes in.
The project has allowed us to move from talking about climate resilience to actually exploring what it could look like in practice and what we can learn from this about housing, community participation and security of tenure.
Over the coming weeks, we will share this journey: where it started, what we have learnt, the people who have shaped it, and some of the questions it raises about how we think about housing and climate resilience in Cape Town.
On 2 October 2026, we will officially launch the KwaLangaLibalele project and the publication in Langa, bringing together what we have learnt through this process.

*ON THE FENCE LINE: PHOLA’S STRUGGLE FOR WATER, DIGNITY AND DEVELOPMENT.*
These images are from Waya Waya, an informal settlement section of Phola in Mpumalanga. They tell a story about what it means to live alongside mining while still struggling for something as basic as clean and reliable water.
Water remains one of the community’s biggest struggles.
With no reliable supply, residents have been forced to dig their own boreholes simply to survive. The water they draw from these boreholes is used for virtually everything, washing, cooking and other household needs, including drinking.
Community members say a municipal water project was started in the area, but work stopped. They have received little or no proper communication explaining why it was discontinued or when it will resume.
And water is not the only unfinished promise.
Waya Waya began as an informal settlement and was subsequently approved by the local municipality. Basic-service projects have since been initiated in the area, yet community members report that none has been completed and that communication about their status remains inadequate.
All of this is happening on the fence line of the Blue Mine operation.
The mine began as an open-cast operation before moving underground. Yet residents living alongside this extractive activity say they have seen no meaningful development in their community.
That contradiction matters.
Mineral extraction can take place metres from people's homes while families dig into the earth themselves to find water. Mining operations can change the landscape around a community while basic infrastructure remains unfinished. Development can be promised on paper while people continue waiting for the most basic conditions of a dignified life.
*This is what inequality looks like on the mining fence line.*
And it is precisely why a Just Transition cannot simply be about replacing one form of energy with another. It must confront the existing injustices experienced by communities that have carried the social and environmental costs of extraction for generations.
As part of our community dialogues in Phola, residents are documenting these realities and identifying the priorities that any genuinely Just Transition must address. Communities are not passive beneficiaries waiting for somebody else to decide what development they need.
They are rights-holders whose lived experience must shape those decisions, the principle at the heart of MACUA, WAMUA and YAMUA's organising approach.
This work forms part of the Strengthening Workers' Active Participation in South Africa's Just Transition (SWAP) Project, implemented in partnership with SATRI and Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) and co-funded by the European Union. The project seeks precisely to strengthen the participation of workers, communities and women and to ensure that community experience informs Just Transition policy and decision-making.
For Waya Waya, the demand begins with something very simple:
*Water is not a luxury.*
*Development cannot remain an unfinished promise.*
*And there can be no Just Transition without justice for the communities already living with the consequences of extraction.*
Nothing about us without us.

We addressed the officials directly and they responded to the grievances that students raised.
Even though we were not fully happy at the end, they were able to answer the questions, but we hope that @myNSFAS officials will continue to work to strengthen internal systems so that they work better for students.
Thank you to all the young people who came through and spoke truth to power! #SofundaSonke
