Excited to have the work @sbmitche, Elise Pizzi, and I published at ISQ! We use novel data on government responses to natural disasters to investigate how international borders and border disputes influence who responds to disasters and how they do so. academic.oup.com/isq/article…

Check out our newest publication from the DMV Lab in ISQ! We examine how disaster response differs in border vs. interior areas and how ongoing or settled territorial disputes alter disaster responses. @LappeAdam @UiPolisci doi.org/10.1093/isq/sqag059

I can't help but notice these lists of 'great men' are all men who were great at killing. In the case of Alexander or (fictional!) Achilles, great at killing and *nothing else.* No scientists, artists, writers, humanitarians. Just killers. Not quite my definition of greatness.
People who hate Great Men theory know that they could never reach same heights as Achilles, Alexander or Caesar. So they live in self-delusion that Great Men don't exist and push agendas that support their narratives.

The government was never meant to be run like a company. Its bottom line isn’t profit margins, it’s people. The notion that the government should be run like a business is an absurd one.
Musk: If a commercial company operated the way the federal government does, then it would be -- immediately go bankrupt. It would be delisted. The officers would be arrested

Let’s be clear: the Department of Education exists because states wouldn’t fund poor schools, wouldn’t protect kids with disabilities, wouldn’t follow civil rights law, especially in the South. Anyone calling to abolish it is calling to turn back the clock—and we can’t let that happen.
At the White House right now. Headed to see President @realDonaldTrump return control of education back to the states—where it belongs.

It's not that the kid is wrong, it's that he's wrong with utter and serene confidence. When people ask me why I wrote The Death of Expertise, it wasn't ignorance that compelled me to write, it was this kind of unbreakable, completely self-assured stupidity that did it.
This was the moment @SamSeder realized you just can't get through to these people

This is exactly the problem. You can't take the "move fast and break things" mentality of Silicon Valley into the federal government, a place where if you break things, people die, or have their rights violated, or can't access essential services.
Musk: I should say we will make mistakes. We won't be perfect. But when we make a mistake we'll fix it quickly. So for example with USAID, one of the things we accidentally canceled briefly was Ebola prevention.

If he does this, it will be the absolute dumbest thing any US President has ever done, ever. Forward deployment is an extremely effective tool of deterrence, and US forces in particular have been shown to dramatically reduce the chance of aggression. WTAF is he doing.
BREAKING: US Vice President JD Vance will probably announce the withdrawal of US troops from Europe at the Munich Security Conference. This is what the head of the security conference, Christoph Heusgen, assumed in an interview with Deutschlandfunk . "I suspect that today the American Vice President will also announce that a large part of the American troops will be withdrawn from Europe and that Europe should take over the tasks

🚀 Launching a new #Stata package #geoflow that allows users to generate spatial arcs. This package is a culmination of over a year of work for building stable core dependencies. It also brings us one step closer to flexibly plot network data (more on generic applications later this year). Given the complex structure of spatial network data (nodes, flows, attributes, projections etc.), the use is not so straightforward but I will add more examples and tutorials soon. From now till March, there are several trainings scheduled around maps and spatial data so expect some improvements in the coming months. Do give it a try! More info: github.com/asjadnaqvi/stata-… Up soon on #SSC!
